Taunton, MA — Motion Control Products – NASA’s Perseverance rover landed on Mars on February 18th. Was there once life on Mars? This is the question that one of the most complex robotic systems ever built by humankind has set out to answer. Several of maxon’s electric drives are used for handling the soil samples—and to control the first Mars helicopter.

Will NASA, the US space agency, successfully land a fifth rover on Mars, allowing it to start its series of missions to bring Mars soil samples back to Earth? The rover named Perseverance will enter the atmosphere of the Red Planet on February 18th—after traveling a distance of more than 470 million kilometers.

If everything goes according to plan, Perseverance will land in the Jezero Crater, which was once filled with water, to search for traces of earlier life. The rover looks a lot like its predecessor Curiosity, but it is equipped with more sophisticated measuring instruments and systems. One of its tasks will be to take up to 30 soil samples, place each of these in separate containers, seal them and place them on the surface of Mars for retrieval and return to Earth by later missions in which maxon will also be involved. This “Mars Sample Return” project is by far the most complex series of missions in the history of unmanned space exploration.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is responsible for Perseverance and is counting on technology from maxon to handle the samples. There are ten electric drives in the rover. These are responsible for moving the robotic arm that navigates the samples from one station to the next. Additionally, the motors are used for sealing the containers and placing them on the surface of Mars.

Just like the more than 100 existing maxon drives that have been reliably performing their duties on Mars, the motors for Perseverance are based on standard catalog products: specifically, nine brushless DC motors, the EC 32 flat and one of the EC 20 flat motors combined with a GP 22 UP planetary gearhead.

The engineers at maxon closely collaborated with the specialists at JPL for several years to modify and extensively test the drives. The robotic arm on which the BLDC motors are mounted as well as the gripper are critical to the application and the success of the mission.

A drone helicopter called Ingenuity is attached to the underside of the rover. Ingenuity is destined to perform the first ever flights on Mars in the history of space exploration. It is solar powered and weighs only 1.8 kilograms. Six brushed maxon DCX motors with a diameter of 10 millimeters control the tilt of the rotor blades, which determines the direction of flight. The drives feature high energy efficiency, are dynamic and very light. “In the development phase, we performed extensive tests to make sure that the motors will work as intended under the extreme conditions on Mars,” says Florbela Costa, project manager for this helicopter at maxon.

With this experiment, NASA wants to test the concept for future drone flights. Flying on Mars is a challenge. The atmosphere is extremely thin, roughly comparable to the conditions on Earth at an altitude of 30 kilometers. The first drone flights are scheduled for May. Space applications only constitute a small portion of maxon’s orders, but the high requirements push maxon to the next level. This is evident in the increased quality standards, as well as new testing methods and processes, which in turn also benefit customers in other areas, such as medical technology. “Apart from this, such space missions are simply incredibly fascinating,” says Eugen Elmiger, CEO of the maxon Group. “Time and time again, I feel honored and proud that our drives are used in these technically groundbreaking Mars missions.”

In July, NASA will be sending its fifth rover to Mars. Its main mission is to collect soil samples that will be analyzed on Earth at a later time. The rover will also carry a helicopter that will perform the first flights on the Red Planet. maxon’s precision DC and BLDC motors will be used for numerous mission-critical tasks.

Our drives have been used in virtually every successful robotic mission over the last three decades. There are now more than 100 of them on the Red Planet and there are likely to be more soon. The launch window for NASA’s next mission opens on July 22nd. An Atlas V rocket will launch the new Perseverance rover on its way to Mars, where it will be searching for signs of previous life on the planet. Its most important job is to take multiple soil samples, seal them in containers and deposit them on the surface of Mars so that a future mission can return them to Earth. Several maxon motors will be used to handle the samples inside the rover. For example, maxon DC motors are installed in the robotic arm, which moves the samples from station to station. Maxon motors will also be used for sealing and depositing the sample containers.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), is carrying out the mission, and have asked maxon to produce 10 drives for the rover. As with almost all previous Mars missions, these drives are based on standard products from maxon’s catalog with modifications. For the first time, NASA is using brushless DC motors, including: nine EC 32 flat and one EC 20 flat in combination with a GP 22 UP planetary gearhead. Working closely with JPL specialists, maxon engineers developed the drives over several years and tested them thoroughly to achieve the highest standards of quality. “We’ve learned a lot from this exciting project,” says Robin Phillips, head of the maxon SpaceLab. “We now have very broad expertise in space applications and have established quality assurance processes that meet the expectations of the industry. Customers from other industries such as the medical sector, where requirements are often similar, can also benefit from this know-how.”  Space missions place the highest demands on drive systems. This includes vibrations during the rocket launch, vacuum during the journey, impacts on landing, and the harsh conditions on the surface of Mars, where temperatures fluctuate between -125 and +20 degrees Celsius and dust penetrates everywhere

The Perseverance rover is expected to land on Mars on February 18, 2021 – but it won’t be alone. A drone helicopter called Ingenuity will be attached to the underside of the rover. It weighs 1.8 kilograms, is solar powered and will perform several short flights, as well as take aerial images. The main goal of this experiment is to test the concept for further drones of this kind. maxon has six brushed DCX motors with a diameter of 10 millimeters controlling the tilt of the rotor blades and the direction of flight. The drives are very light, dynamic and highly energy-efficient. These properties are crucial, because every gram counts on the Mars helicopter. Flying on Mars is not easy. The atmosphere is extremely thin, roughly comparable to the conditions on Earth at an altitude of 30 kilometers. The drone helicopter has flown in a simulated test environment in the JPL laboratory. Whether it will lift off on Mars remains to be seen. First, other obstacles, such as the rocket launch, must be successful. “We hope that everything goes well and that we’ll soon see our drives in action on Mars,” says maxon CEO Eugen Elmiger. “We’re all keeping our fingers crossed.”

Challenge

A leading supplier of laser processing equipment to the semiconductor industry wanted a next generation masking system for extreme UV lithography. The customer approached Steinmeyer with a demanding set of requirements. The motion system needed flexibility to provide fine adjustment during processing and coarse movement into a service position outside the optical path. Travel of 160mm was required in the horizontal axis and 50mm in the vertical axis, with speeds up to 50mm/sec and repeatability of better than 2 microns. The mask also needed to tilt as much as 1.5 degrees around the optical axis. Finally, the dry nitrogen atmosphere and strict boundaries on contamination levels made the choice of materials and lubricants challenging.

 

Steinmeyer Mechatronik, a division of Steinmeyer, designed an innovative multi-drive configuration. It features stainless steel, 12 x 5 preloaded ball screws. Two vertical drives enable both translation and tilt. A stage supporting both vertical drives moves the mask horizontally. The mask frame with the associated pivot points are magnetically preloaded, which enables easy service plus backlash-free tilt. Further, the motor encoder assembly is easily detachable for quick servicing.

Special design elements regarding coatings and ball screw lubricants were also incorporated to address demands unique to this application. An eUV absorbent coating was applied on all internal surfaces to minimize signal scattering. Also, a highly specialized lubricant was selected. This PFPE oil is chemically stable under eUV exposure while exhibiting extremely low outgassing. It is also thermally stable, nonflammable, and insoluble in water, acids, bases, and most organic solvents.

The customer completed the full acceptance testing of the system. They are thrilled by the combination of coarse and fine movement in one mechanism. Plus, the system greatly speeds their process of mask testing.

Longmeadow, MA — Motion Control Components – Linear Motion – In dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic many companies have volunteered or been requested to produce urgently needed medical products such as: Masks, gowns, and ventilators. “Tooling Up” quickly to produce medical grade products for some companies can bring challenges. In addition to needing FDA compliant materials that will be used in the actual masks, gowns, and ventilators, the tooling used to manufacture these products may also need to meet FDA compliance standards. Depending on the product being manufactured, the tooling may need to be: Washed down using caustic chemicals, cleaned with high pressure steam, or sterilized with high Intensity Ultra Violet light or radiation.

Ordering custom FDA compliant linear motion slides and XYZ stages can result in long delays. As an alternative, many companies have linear motion slides in stock for immediate delivery, however, they may not be FDA compliant. In many cases it is the bearings that are not in compliance. LM76 manufactures several types of FDA compliant linear bearings and pillow blocks that are drop-in-replacements for existing bearings. FDA compliant bearings and pillow blocks from LM76 will not trap contaminating debris and can be thoroughly sanitized following Sanitation StandardOperating Procedures (SSOPs). SSOPs are detailed schedules and procedures specifying what to clean, how to clean, how often to clean, and the record keeping used for monitoring.

A helpful component selection guide from LM76, “Linear Bearings, 6 Simple Steps – FDA Compliance, Wash Down Compliance,” details the linear motion components available from LM76 that are FDA/UDSA/3A-Dairy compliant. Included are: Foodstream electroless nickel plated pillow blocks, PTFE lined stainless steel bearings, ceramic coated linear bearings, self-aligning corrosion resistant linear ball bearings, and Thomson® Super SmartTM corrosion resistant, self-aligning, high load linear ball bearings, and solid ETX pillow block/bearings. Shafting to compliment the type of bearing selected includes: Class L Stainless 303/304/316, 440C case hardened stainless, Rc 60 case hardened steel with an Armoloy coating and also Rc78 Class L for enhanced hardness and wear resistance. End blocks and shaft supports that have a ceramic or electroless nickel coating are also available, as well as new ETX Scraper Seals that prevents intrusion of contaminates adding another line of defense.

LM76 also designs and custom builds linear slides from Stainless Steel and other FDA wash down compliant materials.

Highly Stiff Linear Axis for Optics

Construction of a flying telescope

The Max Planck Institute has built a helium-balloon borne telescope in the Sunrise project. This telescope hung from the balloon by means of a rope and ascended to heights of up to 24000m. The atmosphere is very thin at this altitude, and the conditions are similar to those in space. Such a balloon mission, however, costs only a fraction of a rocket launch with a conventional satellite, and represents an interesting alternative to space travel. Since the telescope hangs only on a rope, it bends due to gravity. Spherical mirrors were used, so that the bend of the optics could be compensated by simply shifting the optical components. The correction movements were achieved by the positioning systems shown here.

System with short strokes and excenter drive

The so-called M3 mechanism adjusts the tertiary mirror in the longitudinal direction and consists of a conventional carriage system and ball screw drive. For the M2 positioning system, which adjusts the secondary mirror in three translational degrees of freedom, a very short-stroke system based on an excenter drive was developed. Both positioning systems are driven by high-transmission miniature stepper motors with additional encoder feedback.

Linear Stage with Foldback Drive

Drive relocated to the rear

The task of this customer-specific OEM development was to create a travel path of 150 mm in 250 mm installation space, in which the load is wider than long. The available installation space had to be completely filled with an aluminum base body in order to achieve the necessary rigidity.

Integrated ball screw with synchronous belt

The ball screw was integrated between the base body and the moving carriage plate. It was also moved downwards via a pair of synchronized pulleys with synchronous belts. The transmission error of this additional transmission element could be minimized by optimally adjusting the pre-stress, thereby resulting in only a slight increase in repeatability errors. A compromise also had to be reached on the guiding system with regard to the guiding relationship. The lateral distance between the carriages had to be greater than the distance between the carriages in the direction of travel. Less stringent requirements for straightness made that acceptable.
