MIT EMERGENCY VENTILATOR (E-VENT) PROJECT COPY

MIT has launched an emergency research project with a team of Engineers and American clinicians to address the question:

Is it possible to safely ventilate a COVID-19 patient by automatically actuating a manual resuscitator?

Their process in approaching this question is to first identify the minimum requirements for a low-cost ventilator, based on the collective wisdom of many clinicians, design against these requirements, conduct immediate testing, report the results, iterate and facilitate discussion.

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control  — The EDD-3701x EtherCAT slave drive joins Galil’s EtherCAT Family. This family has grown to include two EtherCAT masters and an I/O slave with both digital and analog I/O points. The EDD-3701x is a motor amplifier that operates in an EtherCAT distributed system where there are up to 32 slave drives and one master. It has a daisy chain topology using standard CAT5 Ethernet cables. The EDD-3701x can interface with Galil masters (DMC-500×0 and DMC-52xx0) for sophisticated applications or with TwinCAT® for very simple applications.

The EDD-3701x series has the ability to control brushed, brushless, steppers, and microstepping motors (See Table 1 for more details). Unlike the competition, the EDD-3701x can both control a motor and also has 8 digital inputs, 4 digital outputs, 2 analog inputs, and 2 analog outputs. All I/O information from these drives are accessible by the EtherCAT master. This capability can eliminate the need for separate EtherCAT I/O devices. The configuration of the EDD-3701x is done using the Galil’s GDK software. Simply connect to a PC via EDD-3701x’s USB port, follow the GDK configuration tool process, and start moving motors. The EDD-3701x also comes with a setup guide to get the user from taking the EDD out of the box to moving motors in a manner of minutes

The EDD-3701x has a small form factor with just 3.9”x5.0”x1.5”. It can operate in either Cyclic Synchronous Position mode (CSP) or Cyclic Synchronous Torque mode (CST). It also accepts quadrature encoder feedback up to 15 MHz.

Greenville, DE —-Motion Control Components – The AB25A100 PWM servo drive from Advanced Motion Controls is designed to drive brushless and brushed DC motors at a high switching frequency. A single red/green LED indicates operating status. The drive is fully protected against overvoltage, under-voltage, over-current, over-heating and short-circuits across motor, ground and power leads. Furthermore, the drive can interface with digital controllers or be used stand-alone, and requires only a single unregulated DC power supply. Loop gain, current limit, input gain and offset can be adjusted using 14-turn potentiometers. The offset adjusting potentiometer can also be used as an on-board input signal for testing purposes. This drive can use quadrature encoder inputs for velocity control. Features include:

  • Built-in hardware protection – Over Current, Over Voltage, Under Voltage, Over Temperature, Short Circuit
  • DIP Switches and Potentiometers for loop tuning, current limit adjustments and drive configuration
  • Standard models support both brushless and brushed motor types

The mid-level, general-purpose 1S Series Servos incorporate valuable input from our customers to optimize use from design to commissioning.

Lower Costs and Total Cost of Ownership
The 1S Series eliminates up to 20% of hidden servo system costs to the customer by no longer requiring separate external parts such as servodrive controller cable, terminal block for I/O, safety cable, brake relay and absolute encoder battery and cable.  Regardless of power rating, all 1S power drives have a uniform height to simplify design and improve control cabinet air circulation. We streamlined I/O connection, replacing an external terminal and cable with a pluggable connector with push-in terminals that allows wiring to be prepared separately. In the process, we increased the number and mix of supported I/O.  The end user benefits from lower maintenance costs.

Advances for High Accuracy Machines
The 1S servomotors use a gear-less/battery-less, multi-turn 23-bit absolute encoder, 16-bit multi-turn to provide accurate position input. Advanced tuning functions help shorten settling time, allowing faster production speeds and greater throughput.
Expanded Built-in Safety Capability

Machine safety for rotating hazards takes a prominent position in equipment design since the recent changes in injury liability. To help OEMs simplify safety system design and standardize on one series without stocking many separate drives, the 1S Series servodrives offer both networked and hardwired safe torque off built in. Configuration of FailSafe over EtherCAT (FSoE) only requires connecting NX Series safety control units to 1S Series servos  via open network “EtherCAT”. No wiring is required for the emergency stop of each axis for servo.
