NASA’s Mars helicopter flew over the surface of the Red Planet for about 40 seconds on Monday, April 19th and landed back on four legs. From NASA’s perspective, this is a historic event similar to the Wright brothers’ first controlled flight in 1903.

With the Mars helicopter, the concept of powered, unmanned, and autonomous flights on foreign planets is being tested. This is comparable to the first Mars rover “Sojourner”, which paved the way for scientific follow-up missions such as “Curiosity” and currently “Perseverance”. “Ingenuity” is about to complete several flights over a period of 30 days, each lasting up to 90 seconds and reaching a maximum altitude of five meters.

Taunton, MA — Motion Control Products – NASA’s Perseverance rover landed on Mars on February 18th. Was there once life on Mars? This is the question that one of the most complex robotic systems ever built by humankind has set out to answer. Several of maxon’s electric drives are used for handling the soil samples—and to control the first Mars helicopter.

Will NASA, the US space agency, successfully land a fifth rover on Mars, allowing it to start its series of missions to bring Mars soil samples back to Earth? The rover named Perseverance will enter the atmosphere of the Red Planet on February 18th—after traveling a distance of more than 470 million kilometers.

If everything goes according to plan, Perseverance will land in the Jezero Crater, which was once filled with water, to search for traces of earlier life. The rover looks a lot like its predecessor Curiosity, but it is equipped with more sophisticated measuring instruments and systems. One of its tasks will be to take up to 30 soil samples, place each of these in separate containers, seal them and place them on the surface of Mars for retrieval and return to Earth by later missions in which maxon will also be involved. This “Mars Sample Return” project is by far the most complex series of missions in the history of unmanned space exploration.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is responsible for Perseverance and is counting on technology from maxon to handle the samples. There are ten electric drives in the rover. These are responsible for moving the robotic arm that navigates the samples from one station to the next. Additionally, the motors are used for sealing the containers and placing them on the surface of Mars.

Just like the more than 100 existing maxon drives that have been reliably performing their duties on Mars, the motors for Perseverance are based on standard catalog products: specifically, nine brushless DC motors, the EC 32 flat and one of the EC 20 flat motors combined with a GP 22 UP planetary gearhead.

The engineers at maxon closely collaborated with the specialists at JPL for several years to modify and extensively test the drives. The robotic arm on which the BLDC motors are mounted as well as the gripper are critical to the application and the success of the mission.

A drone helicopter called Ingenuity is attached to the underside of the rover. Ingenuity is destined to perform the first ever flights on Mars in the history of space exploration. It is solar powered and weighs only 1.8 kilograms. Six brushed maxon DCX motors with a diameter of 10 millimeters control the tilt of the rotor blades, which determines the direction of flight. The drives feature high energy efficiency, are dynamic and very light. “In the development phase, we performed extensive tests to make sure that the motors will work as intended under the extreme conditions on Mars,” says Florbela Costa, project manager for this helicopter at maxon.

With this experiment, NASA wants to test the concept for future drone flights. Flying on Mars is a challenge. The atmosphere is extremely thin, roughly comparable to the conditions on Earth at an altitude of 30 kilometers. The first drone flights are scheduled for May. Space applications only constitute a small portion of maxon’s orders, but the high requirements push maxon to the next level. This is evident in the increased quality standards, as well as new testing methods and processes, which in turn also benefit customers in other areas, such as medical technology. “Apart from this, such space missions are simply incredibly fascinating,” says Eugen Elmiger, CEO of the maxon Group. “Time and time again, I feel honored and proud that our drives are used in these technically groundbreaking Mars missions.”

In July, NASA sent its fifth rover to Mars. Its main mission is to collect soil samples that will be analyzed on Earth at a later time. The rover also carried a helicopter that is performing flights on the Red Planet. maxon’s precision DC and BLDC motors are used for numerous mission-critical tasks.

Our drives have been used in virtually every successful robotic mission over the last three decades. There are now more than 100 of them on the Red Planet and there are likely to be more soon. The launch window for NASA’s next mission opens on July 22nd. An Atlas V rocket will launch the new Perseverance rover on its way to Mars, where it will be searching for signs of previous life on the planet. Its most important job is to take multiple soil samples, seal them in containers and deposit them on the surface of Mars so that a future mission can return them to Earth. Several maxon motors will be used to handle the samples inside the rover. For example, maxon DC motors are installed in the robotic arm, which moves the samples from station to station. Maxon motors will also be used for sealing and depositing the sample containers.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), is carrying out the mission, and have asked maxon to produce 10 drives for the rover. As with almost all previous Mars missions, these drives are based on standard products from maxon’s catalog with modifications. For the first time, NASA is using brushless DC motors, including: nine EC 32 flat and one EC 20 flat in combination with a GP 22 UP planetary gearhead. Working closely with JPL specialists, maxon engineers developed the drives over several years and tested them thoroughly to achieve the highest standards of quality. “We’ve learned a lot from this exciting project,” says Robin Phillips, head of the maxon SpaceLab. “We now have very broad expertise in space applications and have established quality assurance processes that meet the expectations of the industry. Customers from other industries such as the medical sector, where requirements are often similar, can also benefit from this know-how.”  Space missions place the highest demands on drive systems. This includes vibrations during the rocket launch, vacuum during the journey, impacts on landing, and the harsh conditions on the surface of Mars, where temperatures fluctuate between -125 and +20 degrees Celsius and dust penetrates everywhere

The Perseverance rover is expected to land on Mars on February 18, 2021 – but it won’t be alone. A drone helicopter called Ingenuity will be attached to the underside of the rover. Whether it will lift off on Mars remains to be seen. First, other obstacles, such as the rocket launch, must be successful. “We hope that everything goes well and that we’ll soon see our drives in action on Mars,” says maxon CEO Eugen Elmiger. “We’re all keeping our fingers crossed.”

motion control - maxonTaunton, MA — Motion Control Products – Maxon has developed a unique upgrade in the form of a new product series for its standard micro gearhead: A wide range of performance improvements offer new opportunities.

The first ideas for the UP-gearhead were inspired by ESA’s Mars project ‘ExoMars’ and NASA’s ‘Mars 2020’ project, where there was a need to ensure the highest possible availability even in extreme environmental conditions.

This also directly affects further parameters of the drive system: Given the same input power, ie. using the same motor and the same motor control system, the gearhead can deliver 30% more torque. Or put another way: the same output power will require 23% less input power for the drive. This results in longer potential action time until the next charge cycle, particularly for battery-driven applications.

As a result of the reduction in the input power required, the used motor can in addition be operated at a more favorable operating point. This factor also improves the efficiency of the motor, and with it the whole drive system.

As an alternative, smaller and/or lighter motors and electronics can be used, with advantages not only in terms of weight but also in terms of cost.

motion control - gearhead groupSignificantly longer gearhead service life: as outlined above, friction in the planetary wheel – axle system could be considerably reduced. At the same time heat generation from operating the drive is noticeably reduced because there is less friction power. Particularly in applications where temperatures should not exceed a certain level (example: medical power tools), there is improved power output.

The durability of the lubricant plays an important part in terms of wear and tear on the gearhead’s mechanical components. The greater the thermal stress, the more quickly its lubricating properties are lost, and the earlier and more serious the abrasive behaviors in the mechanical system. The abraded metal particles also lead to an agglutination of the lubricant, potentially resulting in a breakdown in its lubricating action.

If the heat feed is checked, then in otherwise identical operating conditions a longer service life can be achieved. This effect is an outstanding feature of the GPX UP: the service life is 5 times greater compared with similar traditional maxon gearheads and when compared to competitors’ models currently on the market it is 11 times greater.

As an alternative to longer service life, as a result of significant improvements in the torque to diameter ratio (power density), much smaller and lighter gearheads can be used.

The advantages of the new design are not only producing improvements in the gearhead specification’s individual parameters. Further new applications for the GPX UP gearheads can also be seen, in particular the so-called force-feedback appliations.

With these applications the advantages of the engineering of the GPX UP version come into play. The use of mounted planetary wheels makes smooth inverse rotation of the gearheads possible in normal operation and, if necessary, can provide operator feedback. Quantifiable and tangible mechanical feedback is in fact conveyed to the force and torque elements. To achieve this, the gearhead needs to be reversible, meaning the torque and changes to the torque which are in contact with the output side, need to be conveyed proportionally to the drive side.

The following example demonstrates this application: In electronic flight control (Fly-by-Wire), the pilot’s steering movements are not transmitted to the actuators mechanically or hydraulically, as in conventional systems, but electronically. But with this the operator initially loses all tangible feedback on their steering movements. With the deployment of a drive in the control column, the electronically transmitted feedback is mechanically conveyed to the pilot’s hand. Inverse rotation is particularly necessary in normal operation, because the additional drive installed should not hinder the movements of the control column.

motion control - gearhead applicationA similar process applies to the innovative surgery robots in the micro- and telesurgery range. Here it is also crucial that the operator receives direct and tangible feedback about the movements they have performed or healthy tissue that should be left untouched. Reversible drives are also in demand in plant construction. In setting mode the axles need to be movable from the output side, without current.

The new GPX UP models combine a range of important product advantages, such as: More power, more torque, improved efficiency, considerably longer service life, reduction in heat generation, less weight in the drive system as well as the additional reversibility function in multistate gearheads.

Taking only the first two factors into account, we might refer to them as ultra-power gearheads. But with the other properties listed here, we can easily coin a new title: ultra performace.

Ultra Performance GPX gearheads from maxon are already available in GPX22 UP und GPX32 UP diameters, and like all ‘X-series’ they are customizable and available to order online. The GPX42 UP version will follow in Spring of 2020. In addition, customizable gearheads in the Ultra Performance series are now available in sizes Ø 8 – 58 mm.

Featuring BiSS-C Harmonic Drive fha-24v-002bi-directional communication for both encoders. The dual encoders are incorporated in essentially the same package size as the long-standing FHA-C mini single incremental encoder version. Without increasing the size, the dual absolute encoder offers single turn absolute position at the output, without the need for battery back-up. Panel mount connectors come standard, and customers can choose between 4 exit options.

The FHA-C mini Series is a family of extremely compact actuators that deliver high torque with exceptional accuracy and repeatability. The actuator combines a high precision Harmonic Drive® gear component with a pancake brushless servo motor. A single turn 14 bit (16384 cpr) gear output encoder has been integrated along with a single turn 14 bit (16384 cpr) motor input encoder providing a true absolute encoder that does not require a battery within 360° of rotation of the output. Typical multi-turn encoders monitoring the motor input shaft require a battery to store the current position when power is lost to the system; however, the dual absolute encoder overcomes this need. Implantable medication delivery systems can have a decisive influence on the quality of life of the patients. Here implantable medication delivery systems are used. Through the localized medication delivery, the dosage can be reduced to the required minimum. These infusion systems thus improve the quality of life of the patients. For many patients, it is only the medication delivery system that allows them to have a life outside of the clinic. Repetitive invasive, painful operations can be avoided. The risk of medication dependency and undesired side effects are reduced to a minimum. All these factors can contribute to the disease no longer being the central focus of the patient’s life.

For example, an active implant is implanted in the lower abdomen directly underneath the skin, where it delivers the medication dosage, programmed by the physician, to the body at the defined times of the day. The implantable unit has a wireless data interface to a patient interface by which the dosage can be adapted at any time. At regular intervals, the internal medication reservoir can be refilled by a specialist. The life span of the active implants measures many years and is limited only by the life of the battery. The core of the active implant is a piston pump manufactured by maxon medical, which specializes in medical technology and is a division of the maxon motor Group. However, the micro drives for implantable medication delivery systems are not comparable with customary maxon motors. In a customary motor, rotary motion is generated and yields torque and speed of rotation.

The reciprocating piston pump generates a linear movement that results in liquid pumping. The individual parts of the pump have very narrow tolerances and allow the pump volume to be adjusted with a precision of less a microliter per piston stroke.

As active implants are in direct contact with human tissue, biocompatible materials are an absolute requirement. Therefore, in most cases, titanium is used for the implants. Machining of titanium, especially safe and reliable laser welding, requires a very high level of expertise. Special testing and quality methods, such as inspecting the penetration depth, microhardness and density of the weld seams, are established procedures at maxon medical. The customer requirements on the product are thus fulfilled and the reliability and constant quality of the manufacturing processes are guaranteed. The entire assembly of the implantable micro drive takes place under cleanroom conditions.

The typical issue found with micro drives of this size is the output power is too low for the application requirements because of the physical limitations. maxon increased the performance of this tiny motor using the latest winding technology along with the most powerful magnets available. This motor is available in two lengths; short version with 0.5 W nominal power or long version with 1.0 W nominal power.

Maxon also incorporated a high quality motion control gearhead to ensure optimum continuous running. High performance ceramics are used for the gearhead carrier to make the motor capable of high input speeds and drive torques. The speed/torque gradient of the EC 4 is an impressive 50,000 rpm mNm-1 with a continuous torque of 0.4 mNm.
