Motion Control – Integrated Motors Feature Fast and Easy Setup for Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley PLC’s!
![]() |
Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control Components — After the successful introduction of the complete range of ServoStep integrated motors JVL is now releasing Add-On-Instructions for fast and easy setup and programming in Rockwell Automation’s Studio 5000 software.
All-in-one unit: Motor, Absolute multiturn encoder, Drive, Controller, PLC and Ethernet Switch as well as TÜV-approved STO option. The integrated design with the controller in the motor minimizes the size of the control cabinet. With less components in the cabinet, the cooling requirements will be lower, reducing both system cost and running costs.
JVL´s ServoStep motors offer state-of-the-art performance that in some applications can rival servo motors at a lower cost. The high torque at low speeds make compact solutions without gear possible. The ServoStep family offers up to double power in same size compared to similar motors, due to higher current/voltage and advanced regulation.
JVL’s closed-loop ServoStep technology eliminates loss of steps and never stalls. The technology causes a paradigm shift that changes your perception of what you can do with a stepper motor. Ultra-high torque enables direct drive without gearing. The motor series also has current control, which lowers power consumption and allows 100% duty cycle without overheating. The ultra-high step resolution of 409,600 step/rev decreases acoustic noise and results in a smooth-running motor.
The wide speed range from 0 to 3000 rpm can be adjusted in increments of 0.01 rpm. Due to automatic tuning, programming is fast and easy.
The motors have 8 programmable inputs/outputs: each can be set up as digital input, digital output or analog input. Motors are equipped with EtherNet/IP interface and as option you can choose STO (Safe Torque Off) versions.
The motors are perfect for multi-axis applications and format adjustments where high positioning speed is required. Due to ultra-high torque, no gear is needed.
For end-of-line packaging and food and beverage applications enclosure class IP65 can be delivered.
To fulfil the demands for diagnostics and easy maintenance in factories of the future the motors are designed for IIoT and are Industry 4.0 ready.
The motors include a 2-port Ethernet switch to reduce wiring in daisy-chain configuration (DLR). Several LEDs enable technicians and operators to get a quick status overview.
To save time, Add-On-Instructions are available for Studio 5000. It makes commissioning fast and easy and the motors can be set up in 5 minutes or less.
Industrial Ethernet:
The motors have the ability to be upgraded with other protocols or newer versions of the same protocol at any time. Because of the upgradeability, the JVL industrial Ethernet interface is also ‘future proof’ as newer versions of the protocols will always fit into the design. The user can switch between Profinet, EtherCAT, Powerlink, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and SERCOS.

Motion Control – Closed-Loop Integrated Stepper Motors feature magnetic or absolute encoder feedback Available from Electromate!
![]() |
Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control Components — JVL presents a new innovative closed-loop stepper motor technology for its NEMA 23 & 34 integrated stepper motor range from 0,1 to 12 Nm. JVL, the European leader in the development of integrated servo and stepper motor technology, has now again developed a new and unique product in the field of integrated motor control.
New Innovative Technology
JVL closed-loop integrated stepper motors, QuickStep®, provide higher torque, faster acceleration, torque control, stall free operation and quieter movements than traditional step motor systems. QuickStep do this with greater efficiency and less motor heating because motor phase current are regulated up and down according to need. Performance of JVL closed-loop steppers are similar to servo motors, but with higher torque and often without need of gearbox, resulting in a more inexpensive solution. Design safety factors have always been high for stepper motors to ensure stall-free operation – now with QuickStep closed-loop control design can be very close to the limit resulting in even lower costs. QuickStep is a true closed-loop control system that compensates step angle errors during a movement and correct errors within a full step. If load becomes too high speed is lowered and position errors will always stay within two full-steps. Smart digital design and very high update rates (36 MHz) means there is no need of any manual adjustment or setup. It works like a perfect stepper motor benefitting from the servo motor technology.
Advantages compared to open loop stepper motors

Motion Control – Closed-Loop Integrated Stepper Motors in size NEMA34
100% Automatic Setup | No need to adjust any parameters. JVL closed-loop stepper motors always work fast and efficient to adapt motor to application. Extremely high update frequency: 36 MHz (where other suppliers have down to only 1 Hz update time). Calculations are made in FPGA and not in slow microprocessors. |
Energy Saving | Like servo motors QuickStep always runs at lowest possible current. This reduces the need for cooling and results in a more “green” solution. |
Stall-Free Operation And No Losing Of Steps | By always monitoring the actual rotor position, the control algorithm ensures that the motor does not lose any steps and it cannot stall. If the rotor is blocked mechanically it just continues right away when the obstruction is removed. |
Torque Control Mode | The torque can be adjusted “on the fly” by the user or by the motor’s embedded PLC program. Applications that were previously impossible for a stepper motor can now be achieved. |
Higher Acceleration & Speed | Stall-free operation means you do not need to worry about setting the motor to a very high acceleration ramp. The motor simply moves the load with the highest possible acceleration at any given time. The result is a much faster machine with more cycles per day. |
Factory Loaded Linearization | The motor and encoder are calibrated during factory production in order to reach a very high mechanical precision. |
Older Motors Are Supported | The Closed-loop control mode is backward compatible with older motors equipped with H2-type encoders. By updating the firmware, the user’s application can benefit from the stall-free operation with very high accelerations and lower power consumption. |
Full Torque Available | The motor is capable of using the full torque according to the torque-velocity curve and therefore the need to have a safety overhead when dimensioning the machine is much less. Smaller motor = lower costs. |
- Position feedback and control
- Fast and easy commissioning. No tuning needed
- No stalling. No step losses at all

Integrated QuickStep NEMA23 Stepper Motors, A Wise Choice When Building an Automation/Motion Control System!
![]() |
Birkerød, Danmark, and Morrow, OH — MIS23 QuickStep stepper motors are a series of versatile, compact, economical integrated stepper motors from JVL. Integrated stepper motors in the MIS23 series have NEMA 23 flange dimensions of 57×57 mm and are available in three models with rated torques of: 1.1 Nm (MIS231), 1.6 Nm (MIS232), 2.5 Nm (MIS234) (1000 RPM @ 48VDC). To reduce cost and protect against electrical noise many of the control and communication functions have been integrated with the motor in a housing designed to provide IP42, IP55 or IP65 protection, and eliminating the need for running control and communication cables. Different PCB’s (modules) can be mounted within the housing to create an automation/motion control system that is easy to incorporate into new and existing applications.
Among the many features that can be integrated are: Pulse/direction driver, serial RS485 position controller with easy graphical programming, point-to-point or multiaxis operation up to 255 axes on the same RS485 bus, CANOpen DS-301 and DSP-402, optional absolute singleturn magnetic encoder with resolution of up to 1024 pulses/revolution for stall detection, 8 I/O that can be configured as input, output or 10bit analogue input, electronic gearing for following an encoder or pulse train in an arbitrarily selectable controlled ratio, high speed position capture.
The MIS23 Series of stepper motors follows the same protocol as MAC motors so that MAC motors and QuickStep motors can be connected to the same RS485 bus, and a double voltage-supply available so that position and parameters are maintained during emergency stop. They also feature: Fixed 1600 pulses/revolution for version with built-in position controller, 200, 400, 800, 1000, or 1600 pulses/revolution for versions with pulse/direction inputs.
All modules are supplied with M12 connectors. MIS23 QuickStep motors require a power supply of 12-48V DC. Backlash-free and planetary gears in different ratios can also be supplied. Additionally the Quickstep series also includes larger versions like the MIS34 (NEMA 34), MIS43 (NEMA 43), and MIS51 (NEMA 51) with even more options, such as Ethernet.
