Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control – The SRS-006-06-050-01-EX single rail positioning stage is ideal for high-speed closed loop positioning applications that require both short and long travel distances. It uses a brushless linear motor to generate a continuous/peak force of 50 lbs [220 N]/150 lbs [660 N] with a total stroke length of 5.75 in [146 mm]. The non-contact 1 micron resolution encoder allows for precise position control. It is guided by a pair of recirculating ball linear bearings on a precision linear bearing rail.

The entire stage is assembled on a single piece of aluminum extrusion, thus reducing the overall weight of the system. There are also provisions that allow customer cables to be routed within the cable carrier. It has end-of-travel rubber bumper stops. A home positioning sensor, end-of-travel-sensors, and custom mounting holes on the moving table are available upon request.

It comes supplied with a ball slide which allows for smooth motion. The magnet housing is the moving part of the assembly so that there are no moving (flexing) cables in the system. This voice coil positioning stage has been manufactured using low-outgassing materials, as selected by NASA, in order to make it vacuum compatible.

Multi-Axis Motion for Lithography Masking

Challenge

A leading supplier of laser processing equipment to the semiconductor industry wanted a next generation masking system for extreme UV lithography. The customer approached Steinmeyer with a demanding set of requirements. The motion system needed flexibility to provide fine adjustment during processing and coarse movement into a service position outside the optical path. Travel of 160mm was required in the horizontal axis and 50mm in the vertical axis, with speeds up to 50mm/sec and repeatability of better than 2 microns. The mask also needed to tilt as much as 1.5 degrees around the optical axis. Finally, the dry nitrogen atmosphere and strict boundaries on contamination levels made the choice of materials and lubricants challenging.

 

Steinmeyer Mechatronik, a division of Steinmeyer, designed an innovative multi-drive configuration. It features stainless steel, 12 x 5 preloaded ball screws. Two vertical drives enable both translation and tilt. A stage supporting both vertical drives moves the mask horizontally. The mask frame with the associated pivot points are magnetically preloaded, which enables easy service plus backlash-free tilt. Further, the motor encoder assembly is easily detachable for quick servicing.

Special design elements regarding coatings and ball screw lubricants were also incorporated to address demands unique to this application. An eUV absorbent coating was applied on all internal surfaces to minimize signal scattering. Also, a highly specialized lubricant was selected. This PFPE oil is chemically stable under eUV exposure while exhibiting extremely low outgassing. It is also thermally stable, nonflammable, and insoluble in water, acids, bases, and most organic solvents.

Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control – H2W Technologies introduces a high acceleration, voice coil driven, XY-Theta positioning stage with a precision bearing system, which minimizes the amount of pitch, yaw, and roll in the system.  The voice coil stage (VCS02-005-BS-01-MXYTh) is a closed loop positioning system that can be used for positioning applications that require a limited rotation theta stage integrated. The stage utilizes a custom low-profile design that utilizes a unique electromagnetic circuit design. The motor has a two-axis planar coil assembly that interacts with a common magnetic circuit.  This circuit design allows for a minimal overall height of 2.93 inches [74.5 mm].

Each linear axis has a 0.23″ [6.0 mm] stroke; generate 0.50 lbs [2.2 N] of continuous force and 1.50 lbs [6.6 N] of peak force.  The X and Y axes are guided by precision linear ball slide assemblies. It includes a one-micron resolution magnetic linear encoder on each linear axis.  The theta axis has a rotary displacement of 10 degrees, a continuous torque of 2.2 in-lbs [0.25 Nm], and a peak torque of 6.5 in-lbs [0.73 Nm]. There is also encoder feedback on the theta axis that has 239000 counts per revolution. This design utilizes a moving coil in all three axes, which has a lower moving mass that enables the highest possible acceleration. Voice coil positioning stages are ideal for applications that require quick, short moves with fast settling times.

Forestville, CA – The LFA-1205 Linear Focus Actuator is a high performance compact positioning system.  It was specifically developed for optical applications requiring both high precision and high-speed positioning over a short to medium stroke.  The LFA-1205 is well suited for optical focusing and other micropositioning applications such as scanning interferometry, surface structure analysis, disk drive testing, autofocus systems, confocal microscopy, bio-technology, semiconductor test equipment.  Note that this motor is normally configured with an analog position feedback sensor and can be optionally equipped with a digital quadrature feedback element.    The key to this products immense success is its novel tubular architecture.  This arrangement provides a means to send the optical path directly through the middle of the motor.  The moving optic attached to the motors ‘C-mount’ is not cantilevered and so has no torques.  The LFA-1205 Linear Focus Actuator is directly compatible with the SCA814 Servo Controlled Amplifier.

By design, the LFA-1205 Linear Focus Actuator rotates approximately 0.1 degrees or 1.7 milliradians for every 1 millimeter of translation.  Through manufacturing tolerances only there can be a small amount of pitch and roll motion that is induced during the intended translation.  These small but real error sources are routinely characterized during the manufacturing process  using our AC400 Digital Autocollimator to control product uniformity.

The ABS positioning stage is a high precision, granite base, air bearing positioning stage for high end positioning applications. It is driven by an ironless core, non-cogging 3 phase brushless linear motor and guided by 5 flat magnetically preloaded air bearings floating on a granite base. The ironless core coil assembly is used as the drive mechanism for the AB stage because of its smooth, non-cogging operation. The lightweight of the coil and table assembly allows for high acceleration of light loads. The air bearings, which are used for supporting and guiding the payload, float on a cushion of air.

This ensures that there are no wearing components in the system. The air bearings are not limited to acceleration limits like their mechanical counterparts where balls and rollers can slide instead of roll at high accelerations. The stiff cross section of the granite base of the stage ensures a flat straight stable platform for the payload to ride on and does not require any special mounting considerations. Bellows (folded way covers) with a 12:1 extension to compression ratio may be added to an ABS stage. The power for the moving 3 phase coil assembly, encoder and limit switches is routed through shielded flat ribbon cable. Special consideration was made to separate the power and signal cables from each other to reduce the effects of noise on the system.

The power cable for the coil assembly and a vacant cable for the customers payload power usage are installed on one side of the stage and the encoder signal, limit switch and an additional vacant signal cable for the customers payload signal usage is provided on the other side of the stage. Standard connectors are provided. The ABS positioning stage incorporates the latest in linear motion technology:

  • Motors: Non-contact 3 Phase Brushless Linear Motor, Ironless Core, commutated either sinusoidally or trapezoidally with Hall Effects. The encapsulated coil assembly moves and the multi pole permanent magnet assembly is stationary. The lightweight coil assembly allows for higher acceleration of light payloads.
  • Bearings: Linear guidance is achieved by using magnetically preloaded, porous carbon or ceramic air bearings; 3 on the top surface and 2 on the side surface. The bearings are mounted on spherical surfaces. Clean, dry filtered air must be supplied to the moving table of the ABS stage.
  • Encoders: Non-contact glass or metal scale optical linear encoders with a reference mark for homing. Multiple reference marks are available and are spaced every 50 mm down the length of the scale. Typical encoder output is A and B square wave signals but sinusoidal output is available as an option
  • Limit Switches: End of travel limit switches are included at both ends of the stroke. The switches can be either active high (5V to 24V) or active low. The switches can be used to shut down the amplifier or to signal the controller that an error has occurred. The limit switches are typically an integral part of the encoder, but can be mounted separately if required.
  • Cable Carriers: Cable guidance is achieved by using flat, shielded ribbon cable. Two additional unused shielded flat ribbon cables are supplied for customer usage with the stage. The 2 power cables for the stage and customer payload are installed on one side of the stage and the 2 signal cables for encoder, limit switch and customer payload are installed separately on the of the stage.
  • Bellows: The ABS comes standard with neoprene / nylon bellows with Mylar stiffeners.
  • Hard Stops: Hard stops are incorporated into the ends of the stage to prevent over travel damage in the event of servo system failure.

The task of this customer-specific OEM development was to create a travel path of 150 mm in 250 mm installation space, in which the load is wider than long. The available installation space had to be completely filled with an aluminum base body in order to achieve the necessary rigidity.

Integrated ball screw with synchronous belt

The ball screw was integrated between the base body and the moving carriage plate. It was also moved downwards via a pair of synchronized pulleys with synchronous belts. The transmission error of this additional transmission element could be minimized by optimally adjusting the pre-stress, thereby resulting in only a slight increase in repeatability errors. A compromise also had to be reached on the guiding system with regard to the guiding relationship. The lateral distance between the carriages had to be greater than the distance between the carriages in the direction of travel. Less stringent requirements for straightness made that acceptable.

The AU200-170×170 stage is a low profile stage measuring just 108 mm (2.252 in) high with a compact footprint (including the motors) of 458.5 mm x 458.5 mm (18.032 in.) The linear travel of the X and Y axes is 170mm x 170mm (6.692 in.), and the resolution of each axis is 20 microns (non-micro-step) or 1 micron (20 micro-steps per step motor driver in use), repeatability is 2 microns, and the positional accuracy is 3 microns. The 4 mm per-turn lead screws have just 2 microns of backlash and the stages have preloaded V-groove and crossed roller bearings contributing to the high precision and stiffness of the AU200-170×170 Stage. Designed for applications such as: alignment, assembly, laser drilling, machining, medical, industrial, semiconductor handling, testing, scanning, and optical applications, this compact, low profile black anodized aluminum XY stage is easy to integrate into new or existing systems.

The XY stage’s table measures 300 mm x 300 mm (11.8 in x 11.8 in.) and features a precision pattern of drilled and threaded mounting holes to facilitate the addition of tooling or fixtures. Additionally a table with a large open aperture is also available.

The standard two-phase (1.8o) stepper motors have knobs for manual adjustments of each axis of the stage, however, the knobs can be replaced with incremental encoders for position verification or closed loop operation. As an option, servo motors and compatible motion controllers are also available from OES, or the AU200-170×170 Stage can be ordered as a complete plug-and-play motion control system.

The AU200-100×100 stage is a low profile stage measuring just 80 mm (3.150 in.) high with a compact footprint (including the motors) of 348 mm x 348 mm (13.701 in. x 13.701 in.) The linear travel of the X and Y axes is 100mm x 100mm (3.937 in. x 3.937 in.), and the resolution of each axis is 20 microns (non-micro-step) or 1 micron (20 micro-steps per step motor driver in use), repeatability is 2 microns, and the positional accuracy is 3 microns. The stages have preloaded V-groove and crossed roller bearings and ground 4 mm per-turn lead screws having just 2 microns of backlash, all contributing to the high precision and stiffness of the AU200-100×100 Stage. Designed for applications such as: Laser drilling, machining, medical, industrial, semiconductor handling, testing, scanning, alignment, assembly, and optical applications, this compact, low profile black anodized aluminum XY stage is easy to integrate into new or existing systems.

Sliding axes for the adjustment of two optics

Two lenses must be positioned relative to each other and also positioned together. Since the unit is exposed to stray radiation from the exposure process, lubrication must withstand these conditions in the long term. The basic solution consists of two sliding axes on a common guide system. Two moving sliding carriages have three carriages each, which allows them to move partially within each other in order to bring the lenses together as closely as possible. The drives consist of smoothened ball screw drives driven by a direct current motor with a rotary encoder. The motor encoder assembly is designed to be interchangeable for easy maintenance.

Designed for extremely dry environments

By choosing a PFPE-based lubricant and a special surface coating, the requirements for clean room compatibility and UV resistance were met. All accuracy-relevant parameters are verified by a measuring station after installation. This measuring station is located in the clean room and records accuracy, repeat accuracy, straightness, evenness and current consumption. Additional tests are performed to ensure minimum clearance in the bearing and smooth running of the drive system.

The AQ140 Series and the AQ150 Series of linear stages are available off-the-shelf in travel lengths of: 50 mm (1.969 in), 100 mm (3.937 in), 150 mm (5.905 in), 200 mm (7.874 in), 300 mm (11.811 in), 400 mm (15.748 in), 500 mm (19.685 in). These 2 µ resolution stages (achieved with a 10 micro-steps per step stepper motor driver) are ideal for: Laser machining, testing, pick-and-place, inspection, sorting, wafer handling, semiconductor, assembly, metrology, and photonics in industrial, laboratory, and medical applications.

The tables, depending on length of travel, measure 120 x 120 mm (4.73 in x 4.73 in.), 150 x 150 mm (5.90 in x 5.90 in.) and 160 x160 mm (6.30 in x 6.30 in.) The AQ150 Series has top and side rail covers. Featuring a 4 mm per turn, precision 2 µ backlash lead screw, typical performance specifications of the AQ140 and AQ150 linear stages include: repeatability of 5 µ, positional accuracy 8 µ, straightness 6 µ, driving parallelism 15 µ, pitching 25 arc seconds, and deflection 25 arc seconds.

Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control – The VCS13-108-LB-01-MCF voice coil positioning stage uses H2W voice coil motor NCC13-30-108-1SH to generate a continuous/peak force of 10.8 lbs [48.0 N]/32.4 lbs [144 N] with a total stroke length of 1.3 in [31.8 mm]. The 1.0-micron resolution encoder allows for precise positioning. The load cell with signal conditioner (100 N capacity, 1 N resolution) allows for 1-100 N of push/pull force feedback. It comes supplied with a rigid recirculating ball linear bearing. The motor coil is the moving part of the assembly to reduce the moving mass of the system. Power is supplied to the motor via a high flex, high reliability flat ribbon cable.

Voice Coil Positioning Stages – Overview –

The Voice Coil Positioning Stage is a compact, small footprint positioning stage. It is ideal for closed loop positioning applications with a short stroke where intricate position, velocity, and acceleration control is necessary.

Their compact size allows them to fit into small spaces. They have very low electrical and mechanical time constants. The low moving mass allows for high accelerations of light payloads.

The ironless core coil assembly has no magnetic attractive force to the stationary magnet assembly, which reduces the load on the bearing system, which increases the life of the bearing. There are no magnetic drag forces (hysteresis), which allows for higher accelerations.

These actuators are wound in such a way that no commutation is required for motion to occur. Electrical devices such as Hall Effects are not necessary. The result is a much simpler and more reliable system.

The VCS positioning stage incorporates the latest in linear motion technology:

Motors: non-commutated moving coil (NCC) or moving magnet (NCM) voice coil motors.

Bearings: Linear guidance and stiffness is achieved by using high precision ball slides or cross roller slides. Other types of bearings and bushings are available depending on the application.

Feedback: Non-contact optical or magnetic linear encoders with a center reference mark for homing. Typical encoder output is A and B square wave signals but sinusoidal output is available as an option. Analog feedback is available via LVDT or Force Transducer.

Limit Switches: Soft limits are typically used and monitored by the controller. But, if needed, end of travel limit switches may be included at both ends of the stroke. The switches can be either active high/low (5V to 24V). The limit switches can be used to shut down the amplifier or to signal the controller that an error has occurred. The limit switches can be an integral part of the encoder or can be mounted separately if required.

Hard Stops: Hard stops are incorporated into the ends of the stage to prevent over travel damage in the event of servo system failure.

Stages can be ordered for any stroke up to 2 inches and any continuous force up to 100 lbs. The stages are built as the orders are placed, they are not stocked, as each customer requirement is different.

It should be noted that for both types of actuators (NCC & NCM) used for these stages, longer strokes are available but the efficiency or motor constant (Km) decreases as the stroke increases. This is due to the fact that the motor constant is inversely proportional to the stroke. If higher efficiency is desired for longer stroke actuators, the coil assembly can be wound as a multiphase coil and then it will have to be commutated. Please consult the factory for long stroke applications.

(54.0 mm) wide by 5.000 in (127.0 mm) long and features a positioning resolution of 1 micron and a 0.125 in. (3.175 mm) open aperture. This precision cross roller stage has a 0.97 in. (24.6 mm) range of motion with 1.0 lb. (4.4 N) of continuous force and 3.2 lb (14.2 N) peak force. Motorized Aperture Stage

Highest precision and compact design

The aperture control is used to adjust a pass-through window for a power laser and makes it possible to confine a laser beam to any rectangular format. The pass-through window is formed by means of four individual apertures, which are positioned by two drives. The height and width of the window can be adjusted almost infinitely from fully closed up to a size of 25 x 25 mm (maximum open); the smallest adjustment step is 50 nm. The beam center is fixed and cannot be changed.

Driven by DC motor and precision spindle with belt deflection

Since the pairs of individual apertures must be moved synchronously to adjust the pass-through window, two individual apertures each are moved by one spindle. The aperture control is driven by a DC motor and a precision spindle with belt deflection – a design with advantages: Owing to right-hand and left-hand threads on one spindle, two counter-rotating movements can be generated with one motor. In addition, the flat design requires only a short installation length in the optical beam path. Since the pairs of individual apertures must be moved synchronously to adjust the pass-through window, two individual apertures each are moved by one spindle. In this process, the parallelism of the apertures that are arranged on opposite sides deviates only by a maximum of 10 µm.

The VCS-1010D linear motion positioning stage (pictured) features a 10 mm clear aperture and a 1 μm resolution digital position sensor, with differential quadrature outputs and a center index pulse. The highly responsive, frictionless voice coil motor has been optimized to keep the moving mass as low as possible for the fastest response times, and it has the lowest electrical noise of any motor type. These compact 76 X 41 X 38 millimeter linear motion stages weigh only 255 grams and can be operated horizontally or vertically. Multiple sets of mounting holes allow for easy integration into new or existing applications.

Van Nuys, CA – Optimal Engineering Systems, Inc. (OES) offers a high precision series of low cost, low profile motorized single axis positioning stages. The compact AQ110 Series of four cross roller linear stages have travel lengths of 15 mm (0.590 in), 30 mm (1.181 in), 50 mm (1.968 in), and 75 mm (2.952 in). Open loop repeatability of all stages is 0.5µ using a 10 mirco- steps-per-step Step Motor Driver or just 0.25µ using a 20 mirco-steps-per-step Step Motor Driver. Precision ground lead screws with just 2µ of backlash and high precision cross roller linear travel guides assures repeatability of 5µ, and positional accuracy of 10µ.

Table sizes and loads of these linear stages are: AQ110-15 is 65 mm x 65 mm (2.559 in x 2.559 in) and 10 kg (22 lbs), AQ110-30 is 90 mm x 90 mm (3.543 in x 3.543 in) and 15 kg (33 lbs), AQ110-50 is 90 mm x 110 mm (3.543 in x 4.331 in) and 15 kg (33 lbs), and the AQ110-75 is 90 mm x 110 mm (3.543 in x 4.331 in) and 20 kg (44 lbs). Each of the tables has a pattern of 16 threaded mounting holes for the addition of custom tooling and the base has drilled and countersunk holes, for easy integration into new and existing applications.

There is a knob on the back of the motor for manual adjustments or it can be replaced with an incremental encoder. Options include: Servo motors, encoders, limit switches, and fully compatible multi-axis motion controllers. Additionally, any of AQ110 series of linear positioning stages can be ordered as a complete plug-and-Play system.

Van Nuys, CA – — Motion Control Components – OES (Optimal Engineering Systems) offers ten high precision, low cost linear positioning stages that can be easily integrated into new and existing applications. Choosing the best slide for the application is easy. The five AQ120 and five AQ130 series of linear motorized stages are available in travel distances of: 50 mm (1.969 in.), 100 mm (3.937 in.), 150 mm (5.906 in.), 200 mm (7.874 in.), and 300 mm (11.811 in.). The compact, AQ120 series of linear stages features high precision steel linear ball bearings and hardened steel shafting and are designed for loads of 15 kg (33.1 lbs) for the AQ120-50 to 5 kg (11 lbs) for the AQ120-300. The AQ130 series of linear stages features high precision open steel linear ball bearings and supported hardened steel shafting and is designed for loads to 30 kg (66.1 lbs) for all travel lengths.

Each of these black anodized slides features a large table with a pattern of threaded mounting holes, and a precision low backlash (2µ) 4 mm per turn lead screw. The resolution for all slides is 2 microns per pulse using a10 microsteps per step motor driver, or just 1 micron per pulse using a 20 microsteps per step motor driver.

These stages can easily be configured as XY stages, with a Z axis, or with a rotary, lift, or goniometer stage. All stages are also available with a servo motor and optical encoder, and are compatible with OES’ line of motion controllers. Options also include: plug-in motor driver / indexer, stepper motor with an optical encoder for position verification.

Additionally all stages are available as complete plug-and-play systems.
