Ball screws specified in the original design proved unacceptable due to the limited length of travel, screw deflection which resulted in a lack of smoothness, and high noise levels. A rack and pinion was also considered but the noise level was also too high and there was no room for a gearbox. Linear motors are quiet however the cost was prohibitive, and a belt system could not handle the heavy loads.

Solution: The new Streamliner Open Screw Drive System from Winner was selected by the production company to move the heavy sets on the sound stage.

The main reactor, the fusion containment chamber that is capable of containing a plasma medium of 10 to 15 million degrees is made of non-magnetic stainless steel as are many of the components. The Plasma Medium could be described as a football shaped blob about 1 meter in diameter by 2 meters long. The plasma medium is injected from each end of the reactor assembly by Plasma Guns.

In this instance, they are moving a 5000 year old relief (hieroglyphics) weighing 8000 pounds to a new location in the Museum. Here is a frontal photo of the Relief from The Tomb of Senenuka.

The MFA contracted CBI Consulting of Boston to design the frame and fixturing. Craig Barnes, an award winning architectural engineer called Mike Quinn of LM76 to review the linear motion application. Over the course of several weeks, LM76 and design partner Todd Kanipe designed a telescoping, high load roller/linear motion rail system that won approval. According to CBI’s Keith Bouchard, the linear rail system moves very smoothly and so far meets the expectations of this program.”

Linear Motion Application – According to MFA Antiquity Specialist Jean Louis Lachevere, “All of these moves present very real dangers to the artifact being transported. In this case, we have a 8000 pound relief which already has its problems due to age and the fact that it is limestone ( limestone is very vulnerable to the atmosphere ).” Seen from the front, the relief is straight. From the back, much of the top back is gone. Thus, the back of the relief has to be plastered so the back is flat. Pins are inserted to further reinforce the relief and then it is tipped on its back. It is then moved to its new atmospherically controlled display case. LM76’s design is used in the transfer from the dolly to the mounting rails and restraints in the display case. This 36” motion is fraught with things that can go wrong. One of the considerations is the possibility of an earthquake…any problem conceivable is taken into account.

Longmeadow, MA — Motion Control Components – Linear Motion – In dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic many companies have volunteered or been requested to produce urgently needed medical products such as: Masks, gowns, and ventilators. “Tooling Up” quickly to produce medical grade products for some companies can bring challenges. In addition to needing FDA compliant materials that will be used in the actual masks, gowns, and ventilators, the tooling used to manufacture these products may also need to meet FDA compliance standards. Depending on the product being manufactured, the tooling may need to be: Washed down using caustic chemicals, cleaned with high pressure steam, or sterilized with high Intensity Ultra Violet light or radiation.

Ordering custom FDA compliant linear motion slides and XYZ stages can result in long delays. As an alternative, many companies have linear motion slides in stock for immediate delivery, however, they may not be FDA compliant. In many cases it is the bearings that are not in compliance. LM76 manufactures several types of FDA compliant linear bearings and pillow blocks that are drop-in-replacements for existing bearings. FDA compliant bearings and pillow blocks from LM76 will not trap contaminating debris and can be thoroughly sanitized following Sanitation StandardOperating Procedures (SSOPs). SSOPs are detailed schedules and procedures specifying what to clean, how to clean, how often to clean, and the record keeping used for monitoring.

A helpful component selection guide from LM76, “Linear Bearings, 6 Simple Steps – FDA Compliance, Wash Down Compliance,” details the linear motion components available from LM76 that are FDA/UDSA/3A-Dairy compliant. Included are: Foodstream electroless nickel plated pillow blocks, PTFE lined stainless steel bearings, ceramic coated linear bearings, self-aligning corrosion resistant linear ball bearings, and Thomson® Super SmartTM corrosion resistant, self-aligning, high load linear ball bearings, and solid ETX pillow block/bearings. Shafting to compliment the type of bearing selected includes: Class L Stainless 303/304/316, 440C case hardened stainless, Rc 60 case hardened steel with an Armoloy coating and also Rc78 Class L for enhanced hardness and wear resistance. End blocks and shaft supports that have a ceramic or electroless nickel coating are also available, as well as new ETX Scraper Seals that prevents intrusion of contaminates adding another line of defense.

Machined from a solid block of self lubricating ETX, linear bearing-blocks have high strength, excellent wear resistance, low coefficient of friction, and excellent dimensional stability at higher temperatures As there is no other materials such as PTFE seals or lubricants these bearing-blocks are maintenance free. Custom designed for use in a nuclear power plant these linear bearing/pillow blocks travel on ceramic coated shafting (also supplied by LM76) completely submerged in radioactive water. Designed with a slight interference fit between bearing ID and shaft, contaminates are scraped from the shaft’s surface. The low frictional characteristics of ETX have little impact on drive force. They are now available in Inch and Metric sizes.

ETX bearing-blocks are also FDA/USDA/3-A Dairy compliant and are also are ideal for: Pharmaceutical, medical, food, and dairy processing applications.

EXT features a high continuous service temperatures up to 210°F (100°C) and offers good chemical and abrasion resistance, low moisture absorption, and resistance to staining. These ETX linear bearing-blocks with the slight interference fit keeps the bearing free from debris and bacterial contamination, are not affected by biological fluids, mild acids, can be washed down with cleaning agents, and steam cleaned.

Don’t need solid EXT bearing-blocks consider the FDA/USDA/3-A Dairy compliant electroless nickel coated or stainless steel pillow blocks with PTFE linear bearings and Snap-in EXT Scraper Seals which are available for closed linear bearings, and closed pillow and flange blocks.

LM76 also manufacturers a broad variety of FDA & USDA compliant bearings and shafting, in inch sizes of .25 inches to 1.5 inches, and a FDA & USDA compliant profile rail and slide system that can easily be integrated into new and existing applications. The bearing options include: Self-lubricating FDA & USDA compliant Teflon® composite bearings in a 304 stainless steel shell, and lower cost bearings with a ceramic coated shell and FDA & USDA compliant liner. Motion Control – Precision “Zero Clearance,” Smooth Sliding Partial Extension Rails Available from LM76!

Longmeadow, MA Motion — Control Components – Linear Motion – As the exclusive distributor of SAIBO Linear Motion Systems in the US, LM76 is offering the SAIBO TPE28 and TPE43 series of Partial Extension Rails. These compact, precision, smooth sliding rails are assembled with a zero clearance. The TPE28 and TPE43 Partial Extension Rail series are created using a “C” shaped external rail and an internal slider. Two rows of steel ball bearings (one on the top and bottom of the slider) travel in ball cages on hardened “V” shaped ways with four points of contact. These Partial Extension Rails are Ideally suited for applications requiring smooth motion such as: Material handling, rail systems in trains, aircraft, ships, trucks, and autonomous vehicles, wafer handling, delicate parts transfer, assembly, testing, laser machining and drilling.

The TPE28 series of Partial Extension Rails consists of 14 rails with stroke lengths from 72 mm (2.834 in) to 601 mm (23.661 in.) and supporting loads from 1224 N (275 lbs) to 15,166 N (3409 lbs) when two rails are mounted in parallel and the load is uniformly distributed between the rails. The TPE43 series of Partial Extension Rails consists of 23 rails with stroke lengths from 123 mm (4.842 in) to 1013 mm (39.881 in.) and supporting loads from 3192 N (717 lbs) to 48460 N (10,894 lbs) when two rails are mounted in parallel and the load is uniformly distributed between the rails. Stroke lengths (extension) are typically 51% of the length of the assembly.

These industry standard Partial Extension Rails are ideal for use in new and existing applications. Both the TPE28 and TPE43 Partial Extension Rails have a maximum working speed of 0.8 m/sec. (xxx in/sec )and have an operating temperature range of -20OC (-20OF) to 120OC (-20OF). The Engineering Edge – Application – Trunnion Grinding Slide for Oil Field

 

We are shipping another slide today for the oil patch. When Weir Oil and Gas called with a slide application that required special engineering, LM76 was all ears – as it was right up our alley. This slide is a Trunnion Grinding Slide which has a 56HP motor running at 3500 RPM mounted to the Y Axis – with a 12″ grinding wheel attached. The X Axis (52″ Stroke) runs on 440C stainless linear ball bearings that have special beryllium copper scraper seal cartridges while the Y Axis (4″ Stroke) employs profile rail guides with double scraper seal kits. Our customer did not want protective bellows so we had to ensure grinding debris would not cause bearing or screw/nut failures. On both axis, we employed our proprietary “Polymatrix, Double Preloaded Nuts” as opposed to recirculating ball nuts. Why LM76? Good question…we were the only company that got back to them with a thoughtful solution.

Zoom Unit

Sliding axes for the adjustment of two optics

Two lenses must be positioned relative to each other and also positioned together. Since the unit is exposed to stray radiation from the exposure process, lubrication must withstand these conditions in the long term. The basic solution consists of two sliding axes on a common guide system. Two moving sliding carriages have three carriages each, which allows them to move partially within each other in order to bring the lenses together as closely as possible. The drives consist of smoothened ball screw drives driven by a direct current motor with a rotary encoder. The motor encoder assembly is designed to be interchangeable for easy maintenance.

Designed for extremely dry environments

By choosing a PFPE-based lubricant and a special surface coating, the requirements for clean room compatibility and UV resistance were met. All accuracy-relevant parameters are verified by a measuring station after installation. This measuring station is located in the clean room and records accuracy, repeat accuracy, straightness, evenness and current consumption. Additional tests are performed to ensure minimum clearance in the bearing and smooth running of the drive system.

Motion Control Application – This was a troublesome application. This system is completely submerged in radioactive water at a nuclear power plant. So no Teflon, no seals, no lubrication – nothing that will degrade in a radioactive environment. The majority of components are stainless steel – except for our ceramic coated/supported shafting and our special, designed for this particular application/never made before, ETX self-lubricating linear blocks. As you see, there is a circular saw which cuts metal-mesh filters which need to be replaced every few months. A big solution for a pressing application. Motion Control Linear Stage

Demanding series production for a medical instrument

The task was to develop a motion unit for a computer tomography scanner which moves tungsten collimators during X-ray source rotation so that the X-ray beam can be adjusted to the minimum radiation dose required. The assembly itself is continuously moved in a circular path around the patient during use. A special challenge was the high acceleration caused by the rotation on a large diameter transverse to the direction of movement. This additional load requires a particularly stable construction with minimal potential for error.

Since this is used in a durable medical device, the requirements for functional safety and reliability are very high. The positioning system has been tested for three million application cycles and has proven this claim with statistical certainty in an endurance test.
