Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control – H2W Technologies introduces a high acceleration, voice coil driven, XY-Theta positioning stage with a precision bearing system, which minimizes the amount of pitch, yaw, and roll in the system.  The voice coil stage (VCS02-005-BS-01-MXYTh) is a closed loop positioning system that can be used for positioning applications that require a limited rotation theta stage integrated. The stage utilizes a custom low-profile design that utilizes a unique electromagnetic circuit design. The motor has a two-axis planar coil assembly that interacts with a common magnetic circuit.  This circuit design allows for a minimal overall height of 2.93 inches [74.5 mm].

Each linear axis has a 0.23″ [6.0 mm] stroke; generate 0.50 lbs [2.2 N] of continuous force and 1.50 lbs [6.6 N] of peak force.  The X and Y axes are guided by precision linear ball slide assemblies. It includes a one-micron resolution magnetic linear encoder on each linear axis.  The theta axis has a rotary displacement of 10 degrees, a continuous torque of 2.2 in-lbs [0.25 Nm], and a peak torque of 6.5 in-lbs [0.73 Nm]. There is also encoder feedback on the theta axis that has 239000 counts per revolution. This design utilizes a moving coil in all three axes, which has a lower moving mass that enables the highest possible acceleration. Voice coil positioning stages are ideal for applications that require quick, short moves with fast settling times.

Reaching New Levels of Speed, Lifetime, and Force Sensitivity

Situation:

In the area of automated laboratory equipment, servo-controlled pipetting modules are a key component of high-throughput systems. A major, global OEM had been using an off-the-shelf linear actuator to drive the pipette. This actuator had a limited range of capability in terms of speed, positioning accuracy, and force sensitivity. Although it met the minimum technical requirements and was cost-effective, engineers soon were asked to push performance to the next level.

 

Challenge:

The company decided to develop a next-generation system. Throughput was essential, as it wanted to target the largest hospitals and laboratories handling tens of thousands of samples annually. The pipetting module also needed to have enhanced flexibility to support a greater variety of operations. It should allow for a wider range of speeds and be highly accurate in both positioning and bottom-finding. Engineers were also tasked with achieving a 10-year lifetime with little or no maintenance. This high lifetime was critical because their business model included free field service. To meet these new requirements, the actuator would have to be redesigned. In particular, the bearing configuration did not support the required accuracy and sensitivity. The supplier was unwilling to modify its design. Company engineers realized that they would have to design a custom actuator.

Resolution:

They came to Steinmeyer for a precision ground ball screw. They knew that Steinmeyer had world-class quality and a very wide selection of miniature screw sizes. For this project, they were able to consider shaft diameters of 5mm or 6mm, with pitch down to 0.5mm! They selected a 6mm screw to meet the challenge. Company engineers conducted extensive performance testing on the first prototype quantities. They put the new module through an exhaustive regimen of motion, and measured positioning, force sensitivity, friction torque, motor current, and other parameters. They verified that their module design met all of the new performance requirements. The company has since achieved FDA approval for the new system and formally launched commercial sales.

Future Plans:

Noise minimization is important for laboratory equipment. The next generation pipetting module will look to ensure the quietest possible operation. The OEM will be evaluating our proprietary super-finishing process called optiSLITE. This technology removes the largest irregularities left over from thread grinding of the shaft. The resulting surface yields a noticeably smoother and quieter operation.

Van Nuys, CA – — Motion Control – High Resolution, Motorized, Pan-Tilt Stages have been added to the extensive line of OES (Optimal Engineering Systems, Inc.) motion control products. These motorized Pan-Tilt Stages are available in two sizes. The PT60-1 Pan-Tilt Stage is a combination of two 60 mm (2.362 in.) rotary stages and the PT100-1 is a combination of two 100 mm (3.937 in.) rotary stages, set at a 90O angle to each other. The rotary stages of each Pan-Tilt stage features a high repeatability of 0.005O (18 arc-sec), a positional accuracy of 0.005O (18 arc-sec), and a resolution of 0.001O = 3.6” (10 Micro-steps per Step Motor Driver in use). These Pan (horizontal table)-Tilt (vertical table) Stages are deal for: Scanning, testing, inspection, assembly, positioning, laser and micro machining, pointing optics and cameras, and other applications.

The pan and tilt axes on both stages have precision V-grove and crossed roller travel guides and are driven by a worm gear with just of 0.005O (18 arc-sec) of backlash. These compact, easily integrated Pan-Tilt stages weigh just 2.0 kg (4.4 lbs) for the PT60-1 and 4.4 kg (9.75 lbs) for the PT100-1 and load capacities are 10 kg (22 lbs) and 20 kg (44 lbs) respectively).

Each axis is driven by a standard bi-directional stepper motor with a knob for manual adjustments and each rotary axis has a vernier scale for setup. The knob on each motor can be replaced with an optional encoder for position verification. Travel speed of each axis is 12O per second with a stepper motor or for higher speeds and closed loop operation, servo motors are available. Electrical connections are made using 9 pin DB-9 connectors.

The PT60-1 and the PT100-1 Pan-Tilt Stages can be ordered as complete plug-and-play systems with a multi-axis controller, joystick, trackball or keypad.
