Van Nuys, CA – The New AU300-AER-02 Three-axis Gimbal Mount from OES (Optimal Engineering Systems, Inc.) with Three-Phase Brushless Servo Motors and Quadrature Incremental Encoders features very high resolution and high speed. Each axis features: Low backlash worm gear drives and precision “V” groove and cross roller bearings for high accuracy and repeatability. The typical accuracy is 0.05° equal to 180 arcsec and typical repeatability is +/- 0.01° equal to +/- 36 arcsec. The maximum travel speed of each axis is 45° per second.

This new three-axis gimbal mount handles loads up to 10 kg (22 lbs) and has a clearance of 300 mm x 300 mm (11.8 in. x 11.8 in.) around the roll axis stage and each stage is capable of the full 360° rotation of its axis. Reaching New Levels of Speed, Lifetime, and Force Sensitivity

Situation:

In the area of automated laboratory equipment, servo-controlled pipetting modules are a key component of high-throughput systems. A major, global OEM had been using an off-the-shelf linear actuator to drive the pipette. This actuator had a limited range of capability in terms of speed, positioning accuracy, and force sensitivity. Although it met the minimum technical requirements and was cost-effective, engineers soon were asked to push performance to the next level.

 

Challenge:

The company decided to develop a next-generation system. Throughput was essential, as it wanted to target the largest hospitals and laboratories handling tens of thousands of samples annually. The pipetting module also needed to have enhanced flexibility to support a greater variety of operations. It should allow for a wider range of speeds and be highly accurate in both positioning and bottom-finding. Engineers were also tasked with achieving a 10-year lifetime with little or no maintenance. This high lifetime was critical because their business model included free field service. To meet these new requirements, the actuator would have to be redesigned. In particular, the bearing configuration did not support the required accuracy and sensitivity. The supplier was unwilling to modify its design. Company engineers realized that they would have to design a custom actuator.

Resolution:

They came to Steinmeyer for a precision ground ball screw. They knew that Steinmeyer had world-class quality and a very wide selection of miniature screw sizes. For this project, they were able to consider shaft diameters of 5mm or 6mm, with pitch down to 0.5mm! They selected a 6mm screw to meet the challenge. Company engineers conducted extensive performance testing on the first prototype quantities. They put the new module through an exhaustive regimen of motion, and measured positioning, force sensitivity, friction torque, motor current, and other parameters. They verified that their module design met all of the new performance requirements. The company has since achieved FDA approval for the new system and formally launched commercial sales.

Future Plans:

Noise minimization is important for laboratory equipment. The next generation pipetting module will look to ensure the quietest possible operation. The OEM will be evaluating our proprietary super-finishing process called optiSLITE. This technology removes the largest irregularities left over from thread grinding of the shaft. The resulting surface yields a noticeably smoother and quieter operation.

The AU200-170×170 stage is a low profile stage measuring just 108 mm (2.252 in) high with a compact footprint (including the motors) of 458.5 mm x 458.5 mm (18.032 in.) The linear travel of the X and Y axes is 170mm x 170mm (6.692 in.), and the resolution of each axis is 20 microns (non-micro-step) or 1 micron (20 micro-steps per step motor driver in use), repeatability is 2 microns, and the positional accuracy is 3 microns. The 4 mm per-turn lead screws have just 2 microns of backlash and the stages have preloaded V-groove and crossed roller bearings contributing to the high precision and stiffness of the AU200-170×170 Stage. Designed for applications such as: alignment, assembly, laser drilling, machining, medical, industrial, semiconductor handling, testing, scanning, and optical applications, this compact, low profile black anodized aluminum XY stage is easy to integrate into new or existing systems.

The linear travel of the X and Y axes is 100mm x 100mm (3.937 in. x 3.937 in.), and the resolution of each axis is 20 microns (non-micro-step) or 1 micron (20 micro-steps per step motor driver in use), repeatability is 2 microns, and the positional accuracy is 3 microns. The stages have preloaded V-groove and crossed roller bearings and ground 4 mm per-turn lead screws having just 2 microns of backlash, all contributing to the high precision and stiffness of the AU200-100×100 Stage. Mask Aligner for Laser Microstructuring

High-precision positioning in semiconductor technology

The mask system provides the fine adjustment and exact alignment of exposure masks in semiconductor lithography. The XY theta adjustment has three linear axes (two vertical and one horizontal) and has a parallel kinematic structure. The two vertical axes generate vertical stroke (same movement) as well as rotation (opposite movement). Parallel alignment of the three drives enables movement in three degrees of freedom; mechanical redundancy in determination is thus ruled out.

Special materials for use in demanding environments

The mask system was specially developed for use under ultraviolet radiation and in an ultra-dry nitrogen atmosphere. These specific environmental conditions require special materials and lubricants. Thus, to minimize stray radiation, all structural parts are coated with a Bilathal coating that absorbs ultraviolet radiation. It also uses a highly specialized lubricant based on perfluoropolyether. PFPE oil exhibits excellent chemical stability and extremely low outgassing even under ultraviolet radiation. It is also thermally stable, non-flammable and insoluble in water, acids, bases and most organic solvents.

Optimized maintenance concept

For maintenance, the system can be moved laterally out of the optical axis into service positions. A magnetically pre-stressed quick-change mechanism provides quick and easy replacement of the mask in just a few steps when necessary. Maintenance of the motors and initiators, which are designed as exchangeable modules, is just as uncomplicated

Van Nuys, CA – — Motion Control Components – Alignment Stage – The XYR-03-01 Alignment Stage from Optimal Engineering Systems, Inc. (OES) is a high resolution, high repeatability XY-Theta stage for such applications as: Angular glass cutting and grinding, wafer alignment, semiconductor handling, laser cutting and drilling. The linear resolution of the X and Y axis is 5µ (non-micro-step) or 0.125µ (20 micro-steps per step motor driver in use), the repeatability is 1.5µ, and positional accuracy is 5µ. The 1 mm per-turn lead screws and preloaded V-groove and crossed roller bearings add to the high precision and stiffness of the XYR-03-01 alignment stage. The linear travel of the X and Y axes is 50 mm x 50 mm.

The 100 mm diameter theta stage is driven by a precision 90:1 ratio worm gear. The resolution of the theta stage is 0.02O (non Micro-step) or 0.001O (20 Micro-steps per step motor driver in use). Repeatability is 0.005O, positional Accuracy is 0.01O and backlash is 0.005O.

Two-phase stepper motors are standard. The knob for manual adjustments of each axis can be replaced with an incremental encoder for position verification or closed loop operation. These black anodized Aluminum XY-Theta stages are easy to integrate into new or existing systems. Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control Components – XY Cross Roller Positioning Stages – The XRS-19-09-XY-001 is a XY crossed roller positioning stage uses a brushless linear motor to generate a continuous/peak force of 52.4 lbs [233.1 N] (bottom axis), 52.4 lbs [233.1 N] (top axis) with a total stroke length of 19.0 in [482.6 mm] (bottom axis), 9.0 in [228.6 mm] (top axis). The top axis is able to directly mount to the moving bottom axis motor. This helps reduce the overall height and moving mass of the system. The non-contact 1-micron resolution encoder allows for precise positioning. It is guided by a rigid high accuracy crossed roller bearing.

There are also provisions that allow customer cables to be routed within the cable carrier. It has end-of-travel rubber bumper stops. A home positioning sensor, end-of-travel-sensors, and custom mounting holes on the moving table are available upon request.

The stage consists of two stacked Single Rail Positioning Stages:

Philadelphia, PA, — Motion Control Components and Systems – The new 300 mm x 300 mm (11.811 in. x 11.811in.) open aperture BEMA45 gantry robot from Intellidrives supports tooling, testing, scanning, and vision systems up to 15kg (33.07 lbs). The 75 mm/rev (2.953 in/rev) precision lead scews can move in the X and Y axes at up to 1 m/sec (39.370 in/sec) and X and Y axis travel are 300 mm x 300mm (11.811 in. x 11.811in.) This low profile gantry is just 141.5 mm (5.571 in.) high. The table top measures 380 mm x 380 mm (14.961 in. x 14.961 in.)

Available motor mounts include NEMA 17 and NEMA 23 mounts for steppers or servo motors with encoders. Constructed using a strong extruded alumiunm frame, the dual X axes design, and 4 precision leadscrews provides ± 50 microns of repeatability on axis. This open gantry robot is easy to integrated into new and existing applications as the spacing and positioning of the support legs for the Y axis (lower axis) can be positioned independently of each other.

Options for the BEMA45 300 mm x 300 mm Open Aperature XY Gantry Robot includes: Stepper motors, servo motors and encoders, drives, controllers, controlles, and software. It is also available as a complete plug-and-play package.

Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control — Fully vacuum compatible four axis positioning gantry (XYTZ). The XY axes are driven by brushless linear motor DR Positioning Stages. The Theta axis is a worm gear stage that is driven by a rotary stepper motor under closed loop control in conjunction with an arc-segmented linear encoder. The Z axis linear motion is achieved by using a voice coil positioning stage operating under closed loop position control. The four axes operate under synchronized position control in conjunction with a non-contact analog output position feedback device that is used to control the position with respect to a silicon wafer. The stage includes a fully integrated four axis electronics package that allow each axis to operate under closed loop control..

All components were selected for their low outgassing characteristics and the system was designed to fit within a customer designed vacuum chamber. This gantry was designed to perform secondary processing procedures on a silicon wafer while exposed to a vacuum.

Motion Control – Single Rail Positioning Stage H Gantry from H2W Technologies.

Santa Clarita, CA —– H2W Technologies’ latest single rail positioning stage H-gantry design is an open frame XY positioning system. It has two bottom parallel axes with one cross axis connecting the two (H-gantry).

Each linear axis uses H2W’s brushless linear motors (BLDM-B04), and each has a total stroke length of 25.67 in [652 mm]; can generate 6.2 lbs [27.8 N] of continuous force and 18.7 lbs [83.3 N] of peak force, or a combined 12.4 lbs [55.6 N] continuous force and 37.4 lbs [166.6 N] of peak force on the bottom axis. The non-contact 1-micron resolution encoders allow for precise positioning. The moving tables are guided by a precision recirculating linear ball bearing system.

The linear axes are assembled on a single piece of aluminum extrusion, thus reducing the overall weight of the system. The top cross axis is mounted to the bottom parallel axis using rigid aluminum extrusions, 90-degree right angle gussets, and custom extrusion end plates. The system is mounted to a flat aluminum tooling plate base. There are also provisions that allow customer cables to be routed within the cable carriers. It has end-of-travel rubber bumper stops.

Additional options include, a home positioning sensor, end-of-travel-sensors, and custom mounting holes. Single extrusion length of up to 6 m long, allows for longer stroke applications.
