Motion Control Application- A wasp shows the way!

Maxon motion control application - Wasp Stinger

What do wasps have to do with brain surgery?  At first glance, not a whole lot. However, one species serves as the model for an innovative brain surgery needle that is being developed by a team of researchers from England.

Maxon motion control application - Brain

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – In tumor treatment, neurosurgeons today use a thin, rigid needle to inject medication into the affected brain tissue. This carries a relatively high risk of injuring healthy tissue, because a rigid needle only allows the surgeon to enter a certain region of the brain, following a straight path. The ideal solution would be a flexible operating tool.

This is where the London Imperial College comes in. In recent years, a team led by Prof. Rodriguez y Baena worked on developing a flexible robotic needle capable of reaching the deeper regions of the brain, while simultaneously avoiding especially sensitive areas. The young researchers sought to imitate the special mechanism employed by female wood wasps that use their thin but very strong drill-like stings to lay eggs inside the wood of trees.

Under the project name STING (Soft Tissue Intervention and Neurosurgical Guide), the scientists developed a prototype consisting of four segments with an overall diameter of 2.5 millimeters, held together by a puzzle-like interlocking mechanism. maxon drives provide the back-and-forth motion of the segments.

“The whole range”

Dr. Secoli is a member of the Mechatronics in Medicine Lab at the Imperial College. He selected the brushless maxon EC20 flat motor with a GP22 planetary gearhead for the application. An EPOS 24/2 positioning controller provides exact positioning. “Easy access to the API (Application Programming Interface) was the major key criterion of selection. On top of that, for fast-prototype system, maxon is the only manufacturer that offers the whole range of products: motor, gearhead, controller” says Dr. Secoli.

In early 2016, the team received a grant of 8.3 million euros from the European Union within the funding scheme Horizon2020. The new project codename EDEN2020 (Enhanced Delivery Ecosystem for Neurosurgery www.eden2020.eu), aims to set a new standard in the field of neurosurgical diagnostics and therapy by 2020.

Motion Control White Paper – Life Expectancy for Single Vs. Double Nut Ball Screws

Motion Control Components – White Paper – Life Expectancy for Single vs. Double Nuts by Steinmeyer!

Motion Control Components - Steinmeyer Single and Double Nuts

Steinmeyer Logo

Life expectancy equations provided by some manufacturers only cover nuts having two-point contact. But what about four-point nuts? And what about the effects of preload?

BURLINGTON, MA –Motion Control Components – The fundamental determining factor of life expectancy is duty cycle, which includes load, thrust, speed, and duration of the travel. Calculating these forces is commonly understood. But preload is a very important factor in ball screw life calculations and must always be considered.  In cases where the applied external load is low, preload can determine as much as 90% of the life.

Steinmeyer engineers have developed a preload graph that consists of two curves: each representing the force-deflection curve of one ball nut in a double nut configuration. It shows how deflections increase with greater force (and vice versa). It also displays how the forces in the opposite nut decrease as soon as deflection results in an axial displacement. For example, with double nuts, the higher the thrust carried by one nut, the more likely it will be the first to fail if not properly preloaded.

Motion Control Components - Steinmeyer Single and Double Nuts Chart

Since single nuts have four-point contact there are twice as many load/unload cycles for each given spot on the ball surface. The preload penalty of the four-point contact configuration is anywhere between a 50% life reduction (if the only force the nut sees is due to preload), and no reduction at all if there is zero preload. Real-world applications fall somewhere in between.

Lastly, if thrust is high enough to cause sufficient deflection, one set of balls in a double nut may run unloaded, which is generally unacceptable and potentially catastrophic. The preload must be high enough to ensure unloading will never occur. This isn’t the case for single nuts since there is no ball set to be unloaded, and exceeding the limits in the preload graph above is not a problem. Therefore, the life penalty depends on preload – life increases as preload is reduced

Does a Single Nut Have the Same Life Expectancy as a Double Nut?

Pegasus Series 1 Linear Bearings – For When A Linear Bearing Simply Cannot Fail!

Linear Motion Control - LM76 Pegasus Linear Ball Bearing!

LM76

E. Longmeadow, MA Motion — Control Components – Linear Motion – LM76 has developed the most corrosion resistant linear bearing available. In space, deep under the sea, or in the harshest environments when there can be no “Plan B,” Pegasus Series 1 Linear Ball Bearings can be counted on to perform. In some applications linear bearings will not move for days, weeks, months or even years, however, when called on to perform they must work as if they just came out of the box. LM76’s Pegasus Series 1 Linear Bearings feature Silicon Nitride (SiNi) Ceramic Balls in a shell with retainer and end caps all made from 440 Stainless Steel and then ArmorloyTM coated.

Silicon Nitride was selected for the balls because it is: 40% lighter than steel, inert to chemicals (vapors, sea water, caustic washing and sterilizing solutions), capable of higher speeds and higher loads: (RC78 hardness), FDA compliant (used in surgical instruments), and does not corrode or support electrolysis.

The shell, bearing retainer and end caps are made from 440 Stainless Steel and coated with Armoloy TDCTM(Thin Dense Chrome). Armoloy is a hard (78Rc), coating with a micro-nodular surface texture. The coating’s nodular finish reduces the amount of surface area in contact with the SiNi balls reducing friction and extending life.

Pegasus Linear Bearings are available 2 series (closed and open), and in 4 sizes (1.000″, 1.250″, 1.500″ and 2.000″). Dynamic load rating for these bearings are: 1.000″ 220 lbs, 1.250″ 352 lbs, 1.500″ 490 lbs, and 2.000″ 858 lbs. Bearings are designed for zero clearance on Class L linear shafting. For maximum performance we recommend LM76 Case Hardened 440 Stainless Steel shafting with ArmorloyTM coating.
