This compact, voice coil motor has a high force to size ratio with 5.5 lbs (24.6 N) continuous force and 17.5 lb (77.7 N) of peak force with a housing measuring just 2.000 in. (50.8 mm) dia. x 3.50 in. (88.9 mm) long. The stroke of the motor is 2.75 in. (69.9 mm) and the precision ground shaft with a diameter of 0.2360 (5.99 mm) has an internal thread, and the housing has threaded mounting holes for easy integration into current and future applications

This clean, quiet, efficient, low inertia, brushless actuator features high reliability and is ideal for: medical devices, assembly equipment, work holding and clamping, antenna positioning, testing, sorting, laser machining and drilling, wafer handling, optical focusing, dynamic vibration absorption, scanners and laser beam steering and filtering. Motion Control Marketing – Adapting to the New Marketing Paradigm

A message for Motion Control Marketers

The role marketing is expanding!

As a marketer of technical products I make an effort to view the sales process as a consumer.  Fact – All consumers are not alike.  Speaking only for myself, although, I believe there are many like me, that want to do their own research, and ONLY talk to sales when they are ready to.

Depending on the consumer it may be early or late in the sales process.  Perhaps the sales funnel should reflect an overlap rather than have a line at which the process switches from marketing to sales.  That said, consumers need to be aware of a product, have their interest aroused, have cause to consider the product, and have an interest in purchasing the product.  Marketing today necessarily has a bigger role in the sales process than in years past.

Years ago (pre-internet) a potential customer saw a product release or an ad in a magazine, circled a number on a “Bingo Card” and got a sales call made on him.  Today the potential customer sees a product release or ad and starts to do his own research.  In addition to some reviews, he will find data sheets, application notes, videos, dedicated web pages, and blogs online (products of the marketing department) all of which will be carefully reviewed before a sales person is ever called.

Developing and implementing an effective Business-to-Business marketing program for technical products that:

Creates Awareness of …

Generates Interest in …

Causes Consideration of …

Raises the level of Intent to …

and

Aids in the Evaluation of …

Does not have to be expensive! 

However, It does have to be well planned …       … and that plan has to be carried out.

For large companies the marketing program can include: Paid Advertising, Product Releases, an expensive interactive Website, a Blog, Data Sheets and Brochures.  All effective tools to create Awareness, Interest, Consideration, etc.

For smaller companies an effective reasonably priced, affordable marketing program can include: Product Releases, a Website, perhaps a Blog, and Data Sheets.

Product Releases are great for creating Awareness of, they also generate Interest in, and cause further Consideration of your products, each time the release is seen in a different print or online publication.

The Website does not have to have an expensively developed “WOW” factor as much as it has to have the information needed to determine if your product is right for the prospects application, or if you have the capability of supplying a custom product to meet or perhaps even exceed his or her needs.

A simple inexpensive blog, can also be an effective marketing tool.

Data Sheets …   … Create a straight forward format for an online data sheet that provides the technical data needed helps in the Evaluation that then can lead to the Sale!

Motion Control – EtherCAT Drive

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control  — The EDD-3701x EtherCAT slave drive joins Galil’s EtherCAT Family. This family has grown to include two EtherCAT masters and an I/O slave with both digital and analog I/O points. The EDD-3701x is a motor amplifier that operates in an EtherCAT distributed system where there are up to 32 slave drives and one master. It has a daisy chain topology using standard CAT5 Ethernet cables. The EDD-3701x can interface with Galil masters (DMC-500×0 and DMC-52xx0) for sophisticated applications or with TwinCAT® for very simple applications.

The EDD-3701x series has the ability to control brushed, brushless, steppers, and microstepping motors (See Table 1 for more details). Unlike the competition, the EDD-3701x can both control a motor and also has 8 digital inputs, 4 digital outputs, 2 analog inputs, and 2 analog outputs. All I/O information from these drives are accessible by the EtherCAT master. This capability can eliminate the need for separate EtherCAT I/O devices. The configuration of the EDD-3701x is done using the Galil’s GDK software. Simply connect to a PC via EDD-3701x’s USB port, follow the GDK configuration tool process, and start moving motors. The EDD-3701x also comes with a setup guide to get the user from taking the EDD out of the box to moving motors in a manner of minutes

The EDD-3701x has a small form factor with just 3.9”x5.0”x1.5”. It can operate in either Cyclic Synchronous Position mode (CSP) or Cyclic Synchronous Torque mode (CST). It also accepts quadrature encoder feedback up to 15 MHz.

Motion Control Speed Reducer

New Two Way MAR-17-2-3:1 and the MAR-23-2-3:1 Speed Reducers using Traction Drive Technology leveraged engineering fluids and precision manufacturing with a simple design that features exceptional reliability and up 98% efficiency! Longmeadow, MA Motion — Control Components – Linear Motion – As the exclusive distributor of SAIBO Linear Motion Systems in the US, LM76 is offering the SAIBO TPE28 and TPE43 series of Partial Extension Rails. These compact, precision, smooth sliding rails are assembled with a zero clearance. The TPE28 and TPE43 Partial Extension Rail series are created using a “C” shaped external rail and an internal slider. Two rows of steel ball bearings (one on the top and bottom of the slider) travel in ball cages on hardened “V” shaped ways with four points of contact. These Partial Extension Rails are Ideally suited for applications requiring smooth motion such as: Material handling, rail systems in trains, aircraft, ships, trucks, and autonomous vehicles, wafer handling, delicate parts transfer, assembly, testing, laser machining and drilling.

The TPE28 series of Partial Extension Rails consists of 14 rails with stroke lengths from 72 mm (2.834 in) to 601 mm (23.661 in.) and supporting loads from 1224 N (275 lbs) to 15,166 N (3409 lbs) when two rails are mounted in parallel and the load is uniformly distributed between the rails. The TPE43 series of Partial Extension Rails consists of 23 rails with stroke lengths from 123 mm (4.842 in) to 1013 mm (39.881 in.) and supporting loads from 3192 N (717 lbs) to 48460 N (10,894 lbs) when two rails are mounted in parallel and the load is uniformly distributed between the rails. Stroke lengths (extension) are typically 51% of the length of the assembly.

These industry standard Partial Extension Rails are ideal for use in new and existing applications. Both the TPE28 and TPE43 Partial Extension Rails have a maximum working speed of 0.8 m/sec. (xxx in/sec )and have an operating temperature range of -20OC (-20OF) to 120OC (-20OF). Cobots, in contrast to traditional industrial robots, are designed to interact with human workers in a shared workspace. They are typically smaller and less powerful than traditional factory robots and are equipped with a variety of proximity sensors, load sensors and other features designed to avoid dangerous collisions between the robots and the people working around them. This focus on safety means that cobots are easier to deploy in a normal factory setting, since they don’t required special fenced off operating areas. Cobots have been used to perform repetitive tasks in light assembly, packaging, materials handling and medical laboratories. Cobots have also been used to help workers avoid direct contact with environments not conducive to direct human interaction, such as high temperature environments, chemically aggressive reagents and toxic pathogens.

Enabling Technologies for the Cobot Revolution

Many cobots are designed to mimic a human arm, with flexible “shoulder”, “elbow” and “wrist” joints. Accurate measurement of the rotary position of these joints is central to enabling the cobots’ control system to keep track of the spatial orientation of all of its moving parts. This is typically provided through rotary encoders mounted in each of the device’s joints.

Encoders measure rotation and return a digital signal that reports the angle of rotation (absolute encoders) or rate of motion (incremental encoders) to the control system. The ‘right’ encoders for cobots need to be accurate, reliable, and compact, with excellent dynamic response characteristics. They also need to be reasonably priced. North Babylon, NY – Rolling Motion Industries (RMI) has released for production the next two in it’s series of highly efficient speed reducers. These 3-to-1 speed reducers use “game changing” traction drive technology. The MAR-17-1-3.1 and the MAR-23-1-3.1 Speed Reducers feature 98% efficiency and with only 6 moving parts they typically out last conventional gearboxes and speed reducers by a factor of 3. The MAR17-1-3.1 Speed Reducer is designed for input speeds up to 3600 rpm with 10 to 20 in/lbs of torque, and the MAR-23-1-3.1 Speed Reducer is also rated for speeds to 3600 rpm but with an input of 20 to 30 in/lbs of torque. As the output speed is reduced by a factor of 3 the output torque increases by a factor of 3.

Using an engineered traction fluid with a coefficient of friction of just 0.1 to 0.12 that cools and lubricates the traction drive these high efficiency speed reducers generate up to 72% less heat even after days of continuous operation. There is no slippage or lost motion between the input and output shafts even though there is no metal to metal contact as the traction fluid is continuously changing from liquid-to-solid-to-liquid as the driving and driven elements interface in the drive. Creating 38% lower dB at 3000 rpm than conventional gearboxes these people friendly speed reducers are ideal for use in medical equipment such as mobile hospital equipment and dialysis machines as well as pumps, blowers, fans, turbo and super chargers, conveyers, HVAC systems, and other power transmission and motion applications.

Having low vibration, and no torque losses from 10 to 3000 rpm, these speed reducers featuring traction drive technology lets a motor operate at peak efficiency while having a damping effect on a motor’s torque ripple. These revolutionary speed reducers are available with an optional overriding clutch. Incorporating standard NEMA mounting dimensions, these speed reducers can be easily integrated into new and existing applications.

The new VLM series synchronous servo motors offer OEMs, machine builders and end-users, an excellent price-performance proposition in the torque range of 0.5 to 4.5 Nm continuous and 16 Nm peak, with speeds of up to 6000 rpm. They also provide highly flexible configuration, proven quality and high reliability. Hence, they are a very useful solution for many applications where stepper or asynchronous motors are pushed to their limits but the expense and unused dynamics of high performance servo motors is not desirable.

The many standard design and configuration options built into the range allow engineers an optimal solution from the outset, to tailor their applications and machine requirements. Thus, installation time and cost is minimized and the price-performance ratio is further improved. Forestville, CA,   —  The SCA814 Linear Servo Controller was specifically designed to control single phase, non-commutated devices like voice coil motors.  like it’s field proven predecessor the SCA754 is a high performance single axis DC motor controller and amplifier system.  It is comprised of a highly integrated single PC board level product with a cohesive interface.  This card provides current amplification and analog servo control interfaces.  The single-phase characteristic of the current amplifier makes it particularly well suited for DC motors such as galvanometers and voice coils.  It was specifically developed for control of motor applications requiring both high temporal and spatial servo precision, such as machine vision, inspection, scientific imaging, medical imaging and other business applications.  This amplifier interfaces directly to many of the Equipment Solution motor/stage solutions.
