BURLINGTON, MA –Motion Control Components – Rolled ball screws from Steinmeyer are in most of the cases a highly attractive alternative compared with other driving solutions, like rack and pinion or belt-drive systems. Steinmeyer rolled ball screws are used in linear modules in handling applications, in medical applications, and also on the feed axis in woodworking machining centers.

Through a highly efficient and fully automated deformation process in the manufacturing of the screw shafts, Steinmeyer rolled ball screws exhibit a very attractive price-to-performance ratio, along with high precision. This product is available as a ready-made ball screw, with the nut mounted and bearing journal machined, or delivered as an unmounted shaft and nut.

The hardened and tempered screw shafts can be produced in lengths up to 3m, for nominal diameters of 20mm or below, and up to 6m in diameters of 25mm and above.

Steinmeyer rolled ball screws are executed in an accuracy class up to T5, looking at the lead error and also at all other specified tolerances in geometry and position.

Using either a liner or an axial deflector system, the single nuts are designed with a flange according to ISO 3408 dimensions or with a connecting thread.

Motion Control Components - Steinmeyer Ultra Thrust Ball ScrewsWoburn, MA –Motion Control Components – In recent years, ball screws have been looked at more and more favorably as replacements for hydraulics. They offer higher efficiency and speed, and can be controlled more precisely with servo loops. And who wants to deal with the unavoidable maintenance and disposal hassle of hydraulics?

Steinmeyer has been supporting this market shift with its line of Ultra Thrust ball screws. These screws utilize larger balls to support much greater load capacities. More recently, we have introduced innovations in through-the-nut return systems to push performance even higher.

The Ultra Thrust line began with our 50×20 mm nut using 15 mm balls. Our standard nut of that size, with 9.5 mm balls, was rated at a dynamic capacity of about 120 kN (12 tons). But the Ultra Thrust version exceeded twice the capacity, reaching 262 kN. We then expanded the line to include larger nuts. Most of our Ultra Thrust screws in the field are sized at 80×20 or 63×20.

More recently we extended the line with a 100×25 mm nut, using 19 mm balls. These screws have proved themselves in the most demanding applications of injection molding.

Beyond increasing the ball diameter, Steinmeyer has designed new return systems to optimize the load capacity. Our latest innovation uses multiple through-the-nut return paths, shown in the schematic below. With this system, the screw exceeds 1,400 kN of dynamic capacity!

Life expectancy equations provided by some manufacturers only cover nuts having two-point contact. But what about four-point nuts? And what about the effects of preload?

BURLINGTON, MA –Motion Control Components – The fundamental determining factor of life expectancy is duty cycle, which includes load, thrust, speed, and duration of the travel. Calculating these forces is commonly understood. But preload is a very important factor in ball screw life calculations and must always be considered.  In cases where the applied external load is low, preload can determine as much as 90% of the life.

Steinmeyer engineers have developed a preload graph that consists of two curves: each representing the force-deflection curve of one ball nut in a double nut configuration. It shows how deflections increase with greater force (and vice versa). It also displays how the forces in the opposite nut decrease as soon as deflection results in an axial displacement. For example, with double nuts, the higher the thrust carried by one nut, the more likely it will be the first to fail if not properly preloaded.

Since single nuts have four-point contact there are twice as many load/unload cycles for each given spot on the ball surface. The preload penalty of the four-point contact configuration is anywhere between a 50% life reduction (if the only force the nut sees is due to preload), and no reduction at all if there is zero preload. Real-world applications fall somewhere in between.

Lastly, if thrust is high enough to cause sufficient deflection, one set of balls in a double nut may run unloaded, which is generally unacceptable and potentially catastrophic. The preload must be high enough to ensure unloading will never occur. This isn’t the case for single nuts since there is no ball set to be unloaded, and exceeding the limits in the preload graph above is not a problem. Therefore, the life penalty depends on preload – life increases as preload is reduced

JVL, the European leader in the development of integrated servo and stepper motor technology, has now again developed a new and unique product in the field of integrated motor control.

New Innovative Technology

JVL closed-loop integrated stepper motors, QuickStep®, provide higher torque, faster acceleration, torque control, stall free operation and quieter movements than traditional step motor systems. QuickStep do this with greater efficiency and less motor heating because motor phase current are regulated up and down according to need. Performance of JVL closed-loop steppers are similar to servo motors, but with higher torque and often without need of gearbox, resulting in a more inexpensive solution. Design safety factors have always been high for stepper motors to ensure stall-free operation – now with QuickStep closed-loop control design can be very close to the limit resulting in even lower costs. QuickStep is a true closed-loop control system that compensates step angle errors during a movement and correct errors within a full step. If load becomes too high speed is lowered and position errors will always stay within two full-steps. Smart digital design and very high update rates (36 MHz) means there is no need of any manual adjustment or setup. It works like a perfect stepper motor benefitting from the servo motor technology.

Van Nuys, CA – Optimal Engineering Systems’ (OES) low profile, XYθ (theta) stages are designed for high precision alignment applications. These stages move in an XY-plane and rotate around the center of the XY-plane. The terms alignment table, or XY-rotation stage are often used interchangeably with XYθ, or XY-theta stage. Available in 12 models, in two precision grades, these stages have linear travels from +/- 2 mm by +/- 2 mm (+/- 0.078 in by +/- 0.078 in) up to +/- 30 mm by +/- 30 mm (+/-1.181 in by +/- 1.181 in). Additionally, XYθ (theta) stages can rotate around the center of the XY plane up to +/- 6O. Four models of the XYθ (theta) stages have solid tables that are sized from 100 mm by 100 mm (3.937 in by 3.937 in) to 200 mm by 200 mm (7.874 in by 7.874 in), and eight stages, from 250 mm x 250 mm (9.843 in by 9.843 in) to 1500 mm by 1500 mm (59.055 in by 59.055 in), are hollow core (open frame) stages.

Available in Normal and Precision grades, these XYθ (theta) stages have preloaded cross roller bearings and typical Normal Repeated Positioning Accuracy is from +/- 1.75 µm to +/- 2.5 µm, and typical Precision Repeated Positioning Accuracy is from +/- 0.7 µm to +/- 1.0 µm.

Parallelism of these XYθ (theta) Stages is as low as 30 µm, and the larger stages can handle dynamic loads to 600 kg (1323 lbs). The stages’ surfaces are treated to ensure durability and they are compatible with OES’ line of Motion Controllers. XYθ (theta) Stages can be ordered with linear encoders for closed loop operation, customized to meet specific requirements, and complete ready to run alignment systems.

BURLINGTON, MA –Motion Control Components – When manufacturers use CNC milling machines or machine tools to serially manufacture parts, they expect gage accuracy to be maintained for all manufactured parts and, at the same time, a reduction in the machine’s total non-productive time. For the ball screw drive as a performing part in the power flow, this implies repetitive motion with high rapid traverse speeds and acceleration values. These high dynamic stresses cause unequal heating of the ball screw drive. Preloading increases this heating which seriously reduces the lifetime of the ball screw drive. The transfer of heat to other machine tool parts can adversely affect the accuracy of the work piece. These inaccuracies accumulate during the course of production, with very undesirable impact.

Separate consideration of shaft cooling

Gage accuracy with simultaneous high dynamic performance can only be maintained if operating temperatures are kept constant. It is not always the best solution to cool just one component in the ball screw. The non-uniform temperature rise in the components is accompanied by expansion in diverse directions. The shaft and nut cooling, as well as the type of preloading are separately considered in the initial design phase to ensure the options are correctly combined with the load requirements during the second stage of the design. Two goniometer stages mounted in an alpha-beta configuration (stacked) can rotate an object around a fixed point in space on a spherical surface. Optimal Engineering Systems (OES) offers stacked, precision aligned goniometer stages with a rotation center 50 mm above the upper stage. The lower (AK110-10) goniometer stage features a 65 mm x 65 mm table, ± 10O of rotation at a rate of 7O per sec. The upper (AK110-15) goniometer stage features a 65 mm x 65 mm table, ± 15O of rotation at a rate of 10O per sec. The accuracies for each unit are; repeatability: ± 4″ (240 arcseconds), typical positional accuracy: ± 9″ (540 arcseconds), and typical backlash is ± 3″ (180 arcseconds). Goniometers and stacked goniometers are used for: Identifying crystals, examining cutting edges of medical instruments, estimating hyperspectral bidirectional reflectance, gloss measurements, measurements of radiation patterns of LEDs, Directing lasers, aligning mirrors, and manufacturing of quartz oscillator plates using quartz cutting x-rays.

The precision, compact AK110-15-10 Goniometer stacked stage, available with either stepper, servo motors, optical encoders or manual adjustment knobs. It has a footprint of just 169 mm x 169 mm, and can be supplied plug-and-play with a motion controller. It is easily integrated into an inspection, testing, or manufacturing environment.
